I know some people dig that antigua finish, but it looks disgusting to me like some kind of moldy cheese

Yeah, once upon a time, Kramers weren’t bad. Then they went through a period of making them out of mulch or something and the name took a nose dive.

Gibson bought them at some point and now seems to be trying to rehabilitate the name. The new ones appear to be much better than their dark days.

But with all the lawsuits, I find it kind of odd that a Gibson subsidiary is manufacturing guitars that appear to be pretty “inspired by“ Fender.

I wonder if they get some kind of pass because of how long Kramer has been on the scene? Isn’t there some kind of “statute of limitations” (I’m sure that’s not what it’s called) that says if you don’t go after somebody within a certain amount of time, then you can’t?

I was under the impression that Fender screwed the pooch on that a long time ago, and as a result it was only allowed coverage for its headstock shapes and logos? I might be remembering something totally wrong. I probably am. But for some reason that sticks in my head as something that happened...

Yeah, that could be. I’d have to ask one of my attorney friends about the law angle, I don’t know much about law.

But that would explain a lot of the Strat and Tele clones on the market, and why they always have a different shape headstock, with everything else looking pretty standard.

"When I began working for Gibson in Kalamazoo, there was a certain hostility towards Fender ... when it came to solid-bodies, they had nothing to compete with a Tele, a Strat, a P-Bass, or a Jazz Bass.... In 1972, I was asked to design a multi-sound system for the SG Standard...I convinced them to introduce a completely new solid-body that offered a wide variety of different sounds... In order to stay within that limit, I had to make use of their existing hardware, including pickup covers, and the champfered body contours I wanted were not in the budget either..." http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/L6S.htm

My bandmate has one of those L6S’s with block inlays . Maple body/maple neck.

Cool guitar with great tones, hot pickups, nice big frets - and a very narrow neck width...:(

    Gibson also tried this:

and then gave in under epiphone and went for the direct copy.

A high school friend of mine had an L6-S. That was a cool sounding and playing guitar, but I thought it was pretty damned ugly. After I read the constraints in the design years later it made sense.

If that's true, it also applies to Dean, who Gibson sued even though Dean's been making their V since, what, the 1970s?
