Hi all,
I am wondering about the Tele that Mr. Petty can be seen holding in this 1982 photograph…brass h/w, individual saddles…and 22 frets? What the heck? Is this even a Fender?

I have never seen Petty play one like that and if you know Tom, you know that he likes his guitars to be mint looking...that one doesn't really look like something he would own. Now, Mike Campbell likes the guitar muts so maybe it belonged to him or else it was just at the location where the interview took place?

It's a dope tele that's what it is! I already have a black double bound one, but I need another to install one of those hipshot string bender units, maybe I'll copy that look. It's a great album cover but I really like this true color picture, and I don't hate the idea of six saddles on a Tele anymore...

Be careful with six barrel saddles ... I found they can rattle against each other after playing a while. Then you start fiddling with things trying to get the rattles to stop. Then you either end up back at three saddles or bent/block saddles. I have one parts-Tele that doesn't get played much lately, but was my only Tele for a long while, that is on the mod list for a 'Bubba Mod' to go with three compensated saddles because of those rattles.

But does anyone know the specs of the neck? Mahogany body, single bound, gold hardware - almost has Black Beauty vibes. Cool pic and cool Tele!

You guys are awesome! My first ever post here, and the response is just baffling! I second Fiesta Red above; totally a new rabbit hole to explore :)
I wanna build one like that now…gotta laugh at myself, a day ago I would have thought “over my dead body” to both individual saddles and fret no. 22 on a Tele, but after realizing Tom Petty did both of those in 1982 I’m thinking “probably a good idea” to both, LOL
