Here is a picture of my latest Ultra Special 6 from VHT showing the circuit and components

    Ultra 6 New 3.jpg

The Ultra uses 2 12AX7 preamp tubes and one 6V6GT

The standard Special 6 only uses one 12AX7

The ultra has a lot more gain and flexibility in tone !

Tube under glass, so it can't wander away while you're playing....

Since I see you've already gotten suggestions for digital/ss amps. You should look at the Boss Katana. The head version is 100 watts, with an attenuator for .5, 50 and 100 watts. It also has a Master volume and up to eight preset channels. The head has a built in 5" speaker as well. Add in the optional foot controller and it is still below your budget.

I just bought the 50 watt combo version. So far, I find that it is a great amp. Still getting used to it.

Why not the Fender Pro Jr IV ??? If you disconnect the speaker, you can use a cabinet.

For 500 bucks, there are a million options for low power as you mentioned.

But what do you mean by low power? 5w? 15w? Tube or SS?

At $500, the world is your oyster.

+2 Hands down this is the one. I would suggest the Ultra, but either one wins.

I’m still not understanding the desire for low watts and great clean. A Fender Twin has great cleans, even at low volume. The reason for wanting low watts is to be able to get great dirty sound at a reasonable volume. Am I missing something? And I’d add that making sure you have a 1x12” or 2/10” or 2x12” cab will be the key to good low volume clean.

low watt amps are fun because you can crank them up and they sound....well, like a cranked amp. and you wont deafen everyone within a hundred yard radius.

I second the Super Champ option. Only the nmore recent X2 comes as a head, but you can connect any 8ohm cab to the combo too. That's what I do and after having both side by side for a few months, I prefered the XD voicings and kept that one. I now run it through a 2X10. If you like Fender chime cleans, this is a good one.

I also had a TSA15H. Great amp with the Tube Screamer inside it. Not that loud for a 15W, but plenty of good cleans, really good cleans and a very effective EQ. Reverb would have been nice. A one trick pony is not my thing, but some want that.

Edit: I also have a 100W Katana. This thing has it's own vibe and great cleans if you know where to look. I really like it.
BTW, if you get to try one, make sure you do a factory reset (look it up, it's easy) before you judge the presets, because previous player might have messed with them, and you could very well hate the amp because of that without knowing. It happened to me.

Thaks so much for all of the ideas. Going to try the Vox MV50 Clean and Quilter Micro head first and move on to the other ideas.
I hope you all had a great holiday/weekend, depending on where you live.

Hmmm, the guy who designed these amps, Dave Harris, passed away earlier this year. But the family is carrying on with the business so am sure you could talk design with somebody at the shop in Ohio: 740-369-3580. Harris, who started out building ham radios, designed his first guitar amp when he was still a kid. A guy who recently cleaned my combo, replaced a tube, etc. said the internal layout reminded him of hi-fi stereo amps from the 1950s. The amp runs super quiet, has a pure, balanced tone, likes pedals.
