I have a couple long plane rides coming up and I want to download some music to my phone that I can listen to in airplane mode. I figure this is the perfect chance to listen to new music that I'm not familiar with. Can anyone suggest some good under-the-radar artists I might want to check out? Tastes run from alt-country to roots and rock. No pop, top-40, metal, synth, emo, etc etc. Turn me on to someone I might have missed.
    Thanks!

After a recent thread on here, I got back in to Kathleen Edwards.

Check out her album 'Voyageur' from 2012, really nice.

This probably won’t fit the bill, but post Cookie Monster vocals Opeth is really good. Prog with a dark edge to it.

Pretty much all Opeth is great. Even cookie monster vox-era Opeth.

Opeth stopped being great when they decided to become Camel-Lite.

Tedeschi Trucks Band. Are they under anyone's radar at this point? Probably not.

Been listening to Revelator but all are good.

Junius meyvant for the Scandinavian Americana.

I like to download concerts from YouTube and convert them to MP3's for my long drives over the our factory location about 4 hours away. Here's one I liked...

Also, check out Paste, Audiotree Live, WGBH Music and Live at KDX stations on YouTube. Lots of great performances. For example, this set by Larkin Poe...

+1 for Larkin Poe if you haven't tried them yet. Also John Mooreland.
