OK guys .. Do a European a favor.

I love the sound of country guitar, but apparently I can't find much actual country I like?

    Recommend me some country.

    But wait, there is more!

    I have criteria:
    1) It's from the 21st century, so none of that old school stuff however great that me be.
    2) None of that wimpy sobbing stuff designed to melt womens hearts by having the protagonist in tears .. When I hit the spotify hot country playlist it has a frightening about of grown men moaning and crying. I really can't stand it and just go back to my usual stuff.

Chris Stapletons Tennessee Whisky is not in this category.

    Hit me! :)

Check out Jason Isbell. Excellent singer/songwriter/guitarist.

Two of my favorite tracks are If It Takes a Lifetime and Speed Trap Town.

Virgil Simpson comes to mind. Jason Isbell. Lukas Nelson. You took Chris Stapleton off the table but he is awesome. These guys are 21st Century neocountry. I do love Kacy Musgraves -- and her band is killer. There are so many young talented artists out there that I just don't have time to listen to. The stuff on the radio is mostly trash. And we don't have a real country guitar hero right now -- can you really relate to Keith Urban's music? No Vince Gill or Brad Paisley. No Jerry Reed or Glen Campbell. Allen Jackson brought us Brent Mason: Emmy Lou introduced us to James Burton and Albert Lee. Where are they now? If you listen closely, you can hear their influence: monster guitar pickers doing fantastic work on some really pathetic commercial country tracks. I really believe that there's more good music out there than ever, just not on mainstream radio.
But you want country guitar. I will introduce you to the Jimi Hendrix of Honky Tonk: Junior Brown.

PS: If you want to listen to country music you have to get over the part about grown men moaning and crying. That's what it's all about.

I don't like a lot of traditional Country much either but I do like Alt Country, electric America.

Mostly, if it has good guitars and songs and takes me somewhere, I'm with it.

Here's some albums that I label "Alt Country" for my own convenience and from which I enjoy some tracks. This is all 21st Century

    John Latham - Lifers
Becky Warren - War Surplus, Undesirable
Kolton Moore and the Clever Few
Sadler Vaden - Sadler Vaden, Radio Road
    Alison Moorer - various
    Jeffrey Gaines - Alright
    Lilly Hiatt - Trinity Lane
Elizabeth Cook - Exodus of Venus
Jayhawks - Back Roads & Abandoned Motels
    Belle Adair - Tuscumbia
    Richard X Heyman - X
Jeffrey Forcault - Salt Ass Wolves
Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound + others
Chuck Prophet Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins
Lydia Loveless - Real + others
    Guthrie Trap - Pick Peace
The Bros Landreth - Let it Lie
Freedy Johnstone - Neon Repairman + others
Rick Holmstrom - Cruel Sunrise (Deluxe edition)
    Kathleen Edwards - Voyageaur

I'm guessing your thinking about Sturgill Simpson.

    All good recommendations.

Also Guy Forsyth, Lucinda Williams (ok, she's on both sides of the OP's century mark) and some relatively new singer/songwriters types - William Beckmann, Matt Harlin and Chuck Hawthorne - all from Texas...

I'm obsessed with Orville Peck lately. It might look a little weird, but just listen to it. His music haunts me.
