i thank everybody for your suggestions! but let me reiterate: i want a tiny amp i can plug straight into my guitar - no jack cord. looking for simplicity. it doesn't have to sound too good and doesn't even have to be very loud, just functional. i hope i can find one that won't puke on me the 2d, 3d time i use it.

all my required tasks are completed in 2-3 hours. the rest of the time i'm free to read, weave baskets, practice my tap-dancing, write a novel or stare at my cell phone or whatever. all is needed is for me to be there in case of emergency, which the alarms tell me about. i want to devote some of that time to improving a bit.

Good for you--that's a great arrangement!

Just a thought--instead of putting the whole amp on the guitar, you might consider a wireless system instead. There are super cheap ones, mid price, etc. I did this with a tiny little desktop setup, worked pretty good and I could move around in my chair as needed, put it down, etc. without running cables everywhere. Could set volume at a whisper, and since the amp (one of the Yamaha battery-powered 10w things, the THR10C) had effects onboard, and sat on my desktop, actually could set the volume lower than I'd have been able to with an onboard amp but still have a reasonable tone to mess around with, plus a built in tuner. Whole setup dropped into a standard-depth desk drawer as well, if I needed to put it away.

I would suggest a Fluid Strum Buddy. It’s actually a pretty decent sound apart from the drive which is a little bit wasp in a jam jar (better than some full practice amps still). I find if that’s what you’re after the phase and the reverb together give you a better sound in place of the drive (kinda the way a surf guitarist replaces drive with reverb). Used it for very early practices with a bass player in his house (he had a full size amp). Only downside is it’s not great with natural finished and it wouldn’t work very well with (say) a Hofner Shorty or a Traveler guitar as there’s nowhere to stick it. It works better for me than my old Fender Mustang I amp which is a fantastic little thing that would 100% recommend but it’s a little too loud for home use (for me) and obviously, not portable while playing. Sorry if I’ve not posted in time for you, only just seen it as I’ve not been on here much in recent years. Hope it’s helpful.

I ran into this by accident .... The Quilter SuperBlock (US).... run it with headphones. Or run it with a 9V adapter for a 1W output into a small speaker. I bought it for other reasons but is has done away with late night family (wife) complaints. I'm about to try it in a live outing soon. To me it sounds good through a PA or stand alone speaker.
It may not be your problem solution but it work(s) for me.

The 5-6W world has pedal amps. EHX has the 5MM & VHT has the Redline Micro 6. I went with a VHT because it has the headphone output. Will need a cab for either though.

Sound clips for the EHX make it seem more versatile, but the VHT can do all that too. The VHT has the tone knob, where the EHX has a toggle. I already have the VHT Redline preamp pedal, part of why I stayed with VHT.

VHT's pedals combined is a Redline 6W combo amp without the speaker & reverb tank.

Fender Mustang Micro. Accept no substitute. It’s impossible for this to not be the perfect solution to the problem described.

Thank you for your input, Radiocaster. no, i want a little bitty amp i can plug right into my guitar. and, as i said in the OP, not a headphone amp.
That's rare indeed. Something may exist, but it probably won't be something you can easily find.

Also could bring problems because of the extra stress on the jack.

Not exactly what you asked for but the outcome is ideal…

I’ve seen custom builds on this page with built-in amps… I wonder if there are any used customs on the market to be found for short money. Or long money… maybe you’re super rich.
