All of this is right up my alley. I’m a huge fan of NY downtown scene stuff—John Zorn’s Naked City album still blows my mind, with great, wild Bill Frisell playing.

Fennesz’s digital work is good, but I was thinking more of his playing on Food’s “This Is Not A Miracle.”

Also, both Doug McCombs and Jeff Parker of Tortoise are great players.

(Most of my refs skew post-rock or weird jazz.)

There are a couple that I dig (in addition to some previously mentioned. Both of these cats can do it all.

    One thing I've noticed recently:
We used to talk about the skills of guitarists in bands/recordings.
Now we talk about the skills of Youtube demo guitarists.

It's a little bizarre that the world of guitar playing seems to be moving on from recorded music toward specialist geekery.
    I'm guilty of it too.

Surprised Spencer Seim hasn’t gotten a mention. This stuff is already 20 years old now, but definitely a hugely influential guy for all those watered down modern math rockers nowadays. He unfortunately often gets overshadowed by his bandmate. He’s also a “tele” guy.

Yup, he's great... and a great vocalist and songwriter. He's so good I can even forgive him for being in Bon Jovi. :D

I just discovered this young lady (Stephanie Jones) the other day and am so impressed. I've watched her do some other pieces but this one has her tremolo picking thru out most of the piece. Just great control and passion. Her dynamics are so articulate for someone so young.
Check it out. She has youtube site.

    And one for good measure

I agree. I really like McCombs' group Brokeback.

Did not know about them! Listening now. This definitely flips my wig, flops my mop, etc.
