... it says that he would ‘borrow another guitar for the show and then buy his guitar back - a money-making trick that didn’t always work due to shadey promoters’: can anyone explain how this so-called ‘trick’ worked because it seems doomed to failure to me?

    And ‘bonjour’ from France!

    Howdy and welcome.
I assume this may refer to the fact that Jimi was poor, and had to pawn his instrument (take out a collateral loan) to survive.
He would borrow another guitar to gig/work with, and get his own guitar out of pawn with the gig money.
Of course, I don’t actually know the details.
Mr. H re-wrote the rule book.

He pawns the guitar, waiting for the promoters to pay because, that's an Hendrix show and he had confidence in himself so he can take it back.

But since there's a condition, if the condition fail, the process do not work.

He would pawn his guitar, get a gig, borrow a different guitar (and get paid for the gig), and then get his own guitar out of hock.

It’s not a good financial strategy, but if you’ve ever lived hand-to-mouth, it’s just another trick to make it to the next gig/paycheck.

    EDIT:
In didn’t see the responses from @brookdalebill and @MojoTrwall...but you can see that it is a sad reality, down to this day.

By the way what's that whole pawn culture in the US ?

They've developed in the late 2000 in France with cash converter and there were quite some good deal, I don't know now.

I get the idea, they buy it cheaper, because they give you Time, but it seems to be quite conséquent.

More person in day to day kind of life in the US or juste cultural ?

JImi was often broke, and didn't even own a guitar at several points in his sideman days.

He was often playing a guitar owned by the bandleader/star.

According to Ian Port in the book The Birth of Loud, when Jimi went to London he took a guitar that Keith Richards' girlfriend stole from Keef to give to Jimi. She thought Keef had enough guitars he wouldn't miss one.
