Today is dads birthday (1926). He will turn 82 years young. His first music job was at the age of 5, playing a dance with his two older brothers. He retired 60 years later in 1991. Though he does not play music anymore he thinks it every waking hour. So I just wanted to say "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" Dad love ya!

Ray has always been one of my heroes, after years and years of reading his name on album credits.

Now he is even cooler since his birthday is a day before mine.

So a big happy birthday to you sir, and thanks for all the great years of music!

    Happy Birthday Ray

I always make the joke that when I first started working sessions , had the song been in F# , I was so dumb I would've capoed at the first fret and played it out of an F position , if it hadn't been for Ray glancing over and always suggesting in a very "fatherly way" what I ought to be doing....I can't overstate how wonderful it was learning from him......

I wish you the very best Birthday ever Ray!!!!!!

    my personal hero!!!

There's a name from my childhood...

I grew up five miles south of Mineral in the village of Cuckoo (yeah, I know it explains a lot). My Dad (Lloyd McCray) was friends with Ray "Ray Q." Edenton, Gene "Curly" Butler and "Slim" Roberts. I remember hearing a lot of stories about those guys from Dad. :p I don't know for sure if I ever met Ray when I was a kid (I do remember watching Gene play and sing while Dad recorded him on his two-track Sony reel-to-reel-recorder.) but I do know that Dad held Ray in very high esteem.

    Happy Birthday, Ray!

    Hey You Guys!!!!

    Hey....
All you Vintage Bloodhounds ought to be ashamed!!!!!:lol:

The Pix that Rays son included in this thread is indeed a real Broadcaster! I saw it once at a session about 30 years ago...(I think its serial number is about 0125????? ) Thats the original back pup and the bobbin top was painted to match the guitar .....While it's true that its been modified, it sure does have a pedigree

I think I remember your Dad buying a mint 54 strat from one of the Jordanaires too (maybe Gordon....I can't remeber) does he still have that guitar???

    Hey Bill,
Dad bought the broadcaster from Fred Carter in the 60's. It's #0135 and had been modified when he bought it. A lot of chink rhythm came out of that guitar.

The strat was a never used never out of the case 57. Dad had loaned one of the Jordanaires an old gibson archtop in the 60's (an L5 or 7 cant remember) he didn't use any more.

One day on a session in the 80's he asked either Neil or Gordon jokingly if he had finished borrowing his gibson. They said they had an guitar Fender had give them in the 50's while they were touring with Elvis and would he swap. Dad said sure though he didn't really need another guitar. He brought it home and called me to come and check it out. Well it was a real surprise when we opened that perfect tweed case and inside was a strat that still had the factory tags wrapped around the tuners.

Sadly he doesn't have the guitar anymore, just the great story.
BTW Ronda posted the pic in this thread and said hi to you and Debbie.

    Tell Ronda Hi Right Back!!!!

    Hi,
Be sure to tell Ronda Hi right back from Debbie and I!!......Am I remembering correctly, didn't she used to own or run a shop in one of the malls around town...?? I hope she's doing well, We haven't seen her in years...

0135!!! I knew it was old and I knew the strat was mint.....If you took some really detailed photos of the BCaster and put it in its own thread the guys around here would probably throw a party!!!!

Thanksfor jogging my memory about that guitar.....that is your 401K but I'm sure you already know that!!!!! :)
