Ray Davies speaks the truth

That came as a surprise. I’ve never even considered him to be in the top ten. Bob Dylan, Carole King, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon, Prince, and Stevie Wonder all jump into my mind before Ray Davies. But that’s for another thread. He’s spot on in every comment of the Revolver album.

 

If he is it's a shame he didn't understand one of the greatest albums in history.

I think the message was that chart action doesn’t indicate ‘good’ music.

Just out of curiosity why all the Beatles hate?

 

Guess it wasn’t as much of a heinous offense to criticize the Beatles back then.

Publish an opinion like that on a big site/magazine today, and you’ll have a barrage of people calling you an uncultured philistine for not understanding the unquestionable genius.

I don’t get why the Beatles are canonized by so many, but they do have a handful of songs I enjoy. About as many as the Kinks.

I think the reality is that article was likely written more for commercial reasons at the time, rather than one artist criticizing another.

 

Gotcha, I can see the overrated thing bugging musicians, a lot of greats never get their just due.
My uncle never worked a real job in his life because he heard the Beatles, they were the inspiration for his career as a guitarist. They may have been overrated and get too much love but their inspiration on music is as strong as and band I can think of.

Opinion not fact. Bit of Kinks fan myself. We just reintroduced Sunny Afternoon into our live set. Just out of interest I also have on vinyl the original version of Lola where Ray sings Coca Cola instead of Cherry Cola.

 

It very well might be, other than mine of course.

 

Awww, I thought mine was the only one that mattered.
