The BOSS PW-2 Power Driver. Less than a year in production, with only 11,000 units worldwide around 96-97. Also has the distinction of being BOSS's worst selling pedal ever, supposedly because at the time players didn't "get it". At least that's what the research I have done indicates.
...

Plus labelling the tone controls 'Fat' and 'Muscle' didn't do it any favours. An error that Boss thankfully never repeated.

And I think it was a bit late to the market for the crowd they were after.

Have this one. Supposedly aimed at grungers, but nu metal came and there was no need for this... I love it. It is compact and overwhelming. Total destroyer

I have a CE-2 and a CE-3. I didn't know they were discontinued until I looked at this thread. I like 'em both for different things. Neither are on my board now and haven't been for awhile but I'm keepin' them 'cause they do what they do really well. I have an RV-2 that was my go to reverb for a long time. Haven't used it in ages but I'm hanging on to it.

I like mine, too.

Yeah, they missed the grunge market. That, plus the Fat/Muscle labeling for bass and midrange, as simonsp says, is part of what players didn't get at the time. It's really not a bad pedal, just a marketing flop.

I see a few online, often going for whatever people think they can get, but the one I bought was the only one I had ever seen in person.

The DD-2 was discontinued in the mid '80s simply because the prices for digital memory dropped drastically. Boss could then cut the price for their delay pedal, but figured everyone who had paid the old, higher price would get pissed off. So, they introduced the new, improved, more economical DD-3. It was initially the same inside.

Over the years, the DD-3 has evolved as different chips have been introduced and the older ones became obsolete. However, the earliest ones were the exact same pedal as the -2.

They did exactly the same with the DSD-2 which became the DSD-3. Both pedals contain the same chip that's in the DD-2. It's the only delay that I've bonded with, I don't know quite what sets it apart from the other, later chips but it allows me to get long delays without the repeats ending up clashing with or overwhelming my playing.

I'd like to get my hands on a PW-2. I owned one a long time ago but I had a complete different set up. At the time I thought the pedal was garbage haha

Ha! I had no idea they were rare. I bought one at the grand opening of Seattle's Guitar Center around 96 or 97. They had them on sale for super cheap. I just sold it about a year ago to a friend for $40, still in pristine shape. I never got much use out of it. It was an okay sounding pedal, but not great. I'll let my friend know they're kind of rare.

I have a CE-2 and an RV-3. Just about my only "rare" Boss pedals, and they are both great boxes. But in reading this thread, I realized that at one time or another, I had almost bought nearly every pedal here! Back in the day, there were far fewer choices for us gearheads, so Boss was the first thing I looked at when I wanted an effect. They had a pedal for every job. When boutique pedals first started to appear, there was almost an anti-Boss movement: "It's only a Boss, how good could it be?" Little did we realize that at least half of those boutique pedals were just tweaked Boss designs.

As rare as the PW-2 is it is still easy to find cheap! I picked one up for 40 off ebay about a year ago and still them on there once in a while cheap.

I just saw one there for $49 and change on a Buy It Now -- Might be rare, but apparently not so desirable...
