If ever there was something absolutely good in elevator music, FSG was it. RIP sir.
It does happen, now and then:Remember when instrumental music could actually become a hit?
Yes, but all those examples are definitely "thens"; where are the "nows"? There were a few in the 1980s but, with the exception of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", most were from soundtracks. I think Kenny G had a couple in the very early 90s... since then, very little, if any. Perhaps we should blame Mr. G. At any rate, it's a shame, but then "mainstream radio" isn't really a thing anymore. It does happen, now and then:
Tel-Star
Sleepwalk
Wipe Out
Walk Don't Run
Stranger On The Shore
The Lonely Bull
Green Onions
Classical Gas
Frankenstein
Pipeline
Feels So Good
...to name a few that I recall on the radio

Gotcha. I have two I'm mixing now. Maybe when I get them out there, something may happen with them. Who knows?Yes, but all those examples are definitely "thens"; where are the "nows"?
The weird thing is, there is PLENTY of instrumental music being made (IDM, jazz, world and "Americana", etc.), but almost none of it is trickleing into the mainstream.Gotcha. I have two I'm mixing now. Maybe when I get them out there, something may happen with them. Who knows?

I think, in general, non-musicians want to hear a human voice in something they listen to. It may be why Jazz and Classical traditionally only account for about 2% each of music sales annually. The weird thing is, there is PLENTY of instrumental music being made (IDM, jazz, world and "Americana", etc.), but almost none of it is trickleing into the mainstream.
I actually just did to jog my wife's memory of the song; surprised myself that I remembered it pretty well!who else can sing that melody from memory, instantly?
RIP
Yep as others have expressed, it's too bad that instrumentals are mostly gone from radio playlists, I really miss that component .. that being said I now rarely listen to the radio anyway and regularly enjoy all kinds of instrumentals by other means. Looking at top 40 lists from the 60's and 70's shows how much more varied and fun radio was in that way.I miss the days of radio when FSG was popular. I still listen to that stuff a lot.
You gotta respect a time when a melodic/catchy instrumental can be a memorable hit. Condolences Chucks family.
