I thoroughly enjoyed his music, his “Hijos de Sanchez” was common in the soundtrack of my childhood - as it was used a lot on Mexican TV coming over the airways into El Paso, Texas.

I miss the days of radio when FSG was popular. I still listen to that stuff a lot.

I can't say I'm all that familiar with his music besides FSG but I've seen a few pics/clips of him performing live with a very young (beardless) Steve Gadd and (moustache-less but with hair) Tony Levin.
Is it just me or does saxophonist Gerry Niewood (RIP) kind of look like Marv (Daniel Stern) from Home Alone?
I also remember seeing Chuck in a commercial for Memorex cassettes and on the Sharon Lois and Bram TV show as a kid.

Yes, but all those examples are definitely "thens"; where are the "nows"? There were a few in the 1980s but, with the exception of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", most were from soundtracks. I think Kenny G had a couple in the very early 90s... since then, very little, if any. Perhaps we should blame Mr. G. At any rate, it's a shame, but then "mainstream radio" isn't really a thing anymore.

The weird thing is, there is PLENTY of instrumental music being made (IDM, jazz, world and "Americana", etc.), but almost none of it is trickleing into the mainstream.

I think, in general, non-musicians want to hear a human voice in something they listen to. It may be why Jazz and Classical traditionally only account for about 2% each of music sales annually.

Yep as others have expressed, it's too bad that instrumentals are mostly gone from radio playlists, I really miss that component .. that being said I now rarely listen to the radio anyway and regularly enjoy all kinds of instrumentals by other means. Looking at top 40 lists from the 60's and 70's shows how much more varied and fun radio was in that way.
