I have a tele neck date stamped March 27th, 1998. It is also stamped with "R. Canto" inside a circle. Does anyone know who or what R. Canto might be?

    Mark Davis,

Not really, it's actually a prototype, with no serial number. I bought the guitar from a shop in Phoenix, AZ, not far from Fender HQ. From time to time this shop gets prototypes. They originally received it from Fender in August of 2000, sold it to some guy who recently sold it back to them. I'm trying to find out what I can about the guitar.

I can't find anything on the web about R. Canto. So I'm hoping someone here might know something.

    Funny:lol:

I'm actually trying to confirm if that is/was a Fender employee. If so of what variety? I suppose it could be something other than a name. So I suppose I am looking for a deeper meaning.

You have to show us some pics of this prototype. I can't help identify Mr. Canto, but I want to see it

Fender sells directly to a pawn shop?

I would just invent a cool story for it; R Canto was a mercenary employee at the Custom Shop who would stay after hours secretly making extra copies he could sell to local pawn shops to get the start up funds for his eventual Colombian smuggling operation (forum rules prevent me from saying what they smuggle). He left his signature on the inside of the necks as a nod to those who would aid in his pursuit. He's now living large in a more tropical climate and his guitars are the stuff of legend - consider yourself very lucky to get your hands on such a historical piece!

Ring up or e-mail (the story/details) the Customer Service helpdesk at Fender....I find Jeff Krause and his colleagues are always helpful.

Not a pawn shop, but a guitar shop. Nice story though.

I'll try and get a pic up later today, but as a teaser it is an ash thinline with a spruce top.

Here she is. Fender doesn't keep records on prototypes, so they couldn't tell me anymore. But based on what I could learn on my own, I think the hardware and electronics are the same as a circa 1999 American Standard.

Back to R. Canto, do most or all Fender necks have stamped names, or is it hit or miss? Is the stamped name thought to be the neck builder, or someone else? Really anything anyone knows about name stamps would be helpful.

Ultimately I'm just trying to learn what I can about the guitar.

Wow, a spruce top on a tele. That's what they use on Jazz box guitars. I bet it sounds nice. My guess is that R. Canto was the fella who came up with the idea and got to make it. Perhaps they didn't like it and subsequently fired him or something. I reckon it's a way cool idea. Nice guitar.

I had a '52 resissue from 1997 that had that name stamped on the neck. I remember that I couldn't tell if the name was "Cantu" or "Canto." He was probably just the guy who worked on that part of the line.

It does indeed sound great. It has a very scooped sound. The bottom is big and the top is is nice and bright, but no real mids to speak of. It really makes for a nice balanced sound. It won't replace my American Deluxe Ash Tele as number one, but it makes for a great alternative.
