I have been able to satisfy a certain principle, which is that I didn't want to work for pay, but I wanted to be paid for my work.

Poetry is a verdict, not an occupation

Read a Q&A in Guitar Afficiando (I think) years ago with Slash, and they asked him what he would say to someone buying a guitar for the first time, what quality etc. He said (paraphrased) "Spend as much as you can afford to spend on the guitar, the amp can wait" ;)

    One of my favorites:

"The best rock and roll is never 'fark me'. It's 'fark you'."

-Chrissie Hynde, on the role of women in music.

    And she didn't say "fark."

"I slept in a chandelier last night and made it in on time. What's your excuse?" --Keith Richards to Axl Rose, who arrived two hours late for a sound check.

"Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us." --Jerry Garcia

"It's pretty clear now that what looked like it might have been some kind of counterculture is, in reality, just the plain old chaos of undifferentiated weirdness." --Jerry Garcia

"All I can say is that it's amazing what you can accomplish when you're young and foolish." --Robert Plant

"A real friend and mentor is not on your payroll." --Prince

And, of course, a few from Frank Zappa:

"Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."

"I like bass lines. They're *good*, because for people who don't understand what's going on in the rest of the song, there's always the bass line."

"If ever there's an obscene noise to be made on an instrument, it's going to come out of a guitar."

The temptation to be ANYONE other than yourself is the greatest possible pitfall in Playing Life. It represents SAFETY. Better guitarists are NOT greater guitarists than Keith Richards, Pops Staples, or Roy Clark Jr. (Etc...)

There are only three reasons to open your guitar case:
    - to learn something
    - to have fun
    - to earn money
