When I drink soda lately, I've been drinking Coke Zero, because my doctor told me I gotta reduce my sugar intake. But, I was too lazy to go to the store tonight, and the vending machine by the pool in my bldg. was out of Coke Zero and Diet Coke, so I got regular Coke, and it tasted like the Coke we loved in the six ounce glass bottles in our youth. It wasn't nearly as sweet or acidic/sour as the last time I tried it recently. And I noticed the label says "original taste" on it, which I've not noticed before. The ingredients still list HFCS, not cane sugar, but does anyone know if they've changed the formula recently to make it more like the original Coke?

Redacted. My post makes no sense whatsoever. Even I don't know what I meant.

I don't know but everything low fat, salt reduced and sugar free tastes bad imo so i'm not surprised you preferred the taste of normal Coke.

I use it as a mouth wash and tooth whitener when I run out of toothpaste.
Polishes chrome fittings and stainless steel sinks up nicely too.

I haven't noticed that, but you can definitely taste the difference, with the formula they put in the retro glass bottles, and that includes the other brands as well that are doing that. I always look for those first. I appreciate the smaller portion too.

Related, there are some studies recently that suggest sugar free items like soft drinks, may not be effective in reducing weight gain - it appears the same triggering that creates the sweet taste, also triggers fat-building, as if the brain can't tell the difference, and still commands the body to store and save fat, lol. But the reduced sugar would still be effective for diabetes or high blood sugar control, per your doctors orders.

I don't know any skinny people that drink a lot of sugar free coke.
I've always had my suspicions that the zero sugar thing didn't work and people were suffering needlessly by drinking it.

That would be coke and whiskey (such as JD, Crown, blends, etc), not coke and Bourbon. Or, is that an Australian thing?

If you think you are doing your body any favors in relation to insulin spikes and weight gain by drinking Coke Zero or Diet Coke, you are sadly mistaken.

Rum and Coke, Bourbon and Seven Up is the proper way to do it.

Bourbon and 7UP was a combination that never would have occurred to me, and then I tried it. It really works. For my taste, the bourbon should be at least 90 proof, ideally 100.

HFCS has twice the 'sweetness' of cane sugar ... and when Coke switched to the New/Classic Coke marketing in the 80s (because sugar prices were skyrocketing due to the low-fat trend of replacing fat with sugar) that was the switch from cane to HFCS. They used the same quantity of HFCS as they had used sugar and the double sweetness causes more thirst and higher drink sales. The taste change you may have noticed is that they could have cut back the HFCS in that particular product so that batch tastes more like the old days.

I know younger people that grew up on HFCS drinks that if you substitute 'real sugar'/'throwbacks' they complain and demand 'the modern stuff'.

    There's no proper way....

I don't drink beer... a bloke's not going to stand around at the pub socialising watching a band on a hot day drinking shots....

rum and coke, bourbon and coke, scotch and coke, vodka and coke... all goes down much the same if it's cold..:) .... I just prefer bourbon and coke....

I'll have a cup of tea or a glass of water if I'm thirsty, I never drink sweet soda drinks for thirst,,,:)

I drink Diet Coke, specifically with aspartame. I switched to Diet Coke way back in the early 80s. I can't drink regular Coke or Coke Zero or Diet Coke with Splenda, they are all just way too sweet and syrupy for me now.

Personally I don't believe it can contribute to weight gain in the same way as sugar does. Whilst aspartame does contain 4 calories per gram (the same as sugar) much less is needed as it is 200 times sweeter than sugar meaning it is effectively calorie free. As the only thing that has been proven to contribute to weight gain is excess calories I just don't think you could consume enough artificial sweetener to put on any weight.

Big coke fan. But nowadays I rarely drink any. It took a while to get to this point. But it's possible, and worth it. Read on.

Glass, can, or plastic? I'm assuming plastic?

I don't think there are any big formula changes. You just haven't been drinking diet or zero long enough to get over the need for sweet. Give it a few more months, and then a regular coke might seem too sweet.

That's good. For one, that'll help you keep sugar down. But you can also keep real coke for a treat every once in a while, and savor it more.

That, and Mexican bottled coke is everywhere now. That didn't used to be the case, 20-30 years ago. You could only get it south of the border. Save the good, real, non-HFC bottled coke for special occasions (with good tacos, mixed drinks, cooking, etc...).
