"Tone" and "Distortion" are not synonyms.
But what about drive? Saturation? Fuzz? "Lead" tones? Crunch? Grainy? Gainy? Fizzy? Buzzy? Staticy? Icepicky?
People do sometimes confuse the two, it's true. To my ears, people often use more distortion than is needed. In most classic rock, for instance, if you really listen there is not much distortion at all, even with pretty heavy stuff. Thinking of, I dunno, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, take your pick. You don't really hear much distortion. I'm guessing we're hearing good amps turned up really loud.
transparent as well
Can you have a distorted tone?
no, no, no. That goes with glassy, clear, uncolored, squeeky, clean..<g>
You forgot airy and effervescent
watery, crystalline, pure, lucid
I say we sound a civil defense siren every Saturday at 12 noon and spend the rest of the weekend debating the merits of its tone.
