    It happened again.

Had a guest worship leader at church last weekend sporting an acoustic guitar. He brings in his case with stickers all over it and pulls out an Alvarez Acoustic guitar. He places it on a guitar stand on stage, plugs into a direct box and goes to get a bottle of water.

Two of the guitar player and a sound tech walk over to just read the top of the headstock. As I am getting my bass ready I hear one of the guitarist say to the other.

"An Alvarez? I thought this guy was good." All three of them start laughing and walk away.

The guest comes back and slings on his Alvarez for sound check. He does a little finger picking, a little light strumming and I am blown away by how good that guitar sounded. One of our normal WL's plays a Martin and I liked the tone of the Alvarez better than the Martin.

After service I asked about the Alvarez and it is apparently 20+ years old and was a Yairi model.

So don't turn your nose up at an instrument until you HEAR it.

Christians demeaning one of their own servants over material things in the sanctuary. Oh well, thread closed.

I've seen gear snobbery there more than in most other common venues, with the possible exception of bluegrass festivals.

    Ego much?

I played an Ibanez acoustic at a bluegrass jam. A few Martin goobers had a problem, but it was their problem, not mine. I sure had fun.

Since 2019, when I put it together, I've taken perverse pride in using my "mongrelcaster" which I named "Taz".....a diminuitive version of my first name, and a tribute to my father and grandfather. I've had a few people come up after a performance, and wonder what "boutique" builder made it. I've also seen eye-rolls and sneers when others see the name on the headstock. I'm indifferent to the "belittling". ;)

Damned straight. Only American made guitars for that blue eyed boy.

Yari's were top of the line in the 70's as were most Japanese builds.

Alvarez are great. My dad has a Yairi, and it's weird and wonderful.

My next acoustic will honestly be a Jumbo Alvarez. I like Taylors more than Martin. I've played Gibsons and Martin's I like less than Alvarez. The Yairi stuff is different weight class. I'm sure some modern Alvarez might not be as good as I remember, but my 17ish year old Alvarez sounds as good as Taylor's double its price. Or it did before the current issues started happening. It's dead past the 7th fret, not sure if it's the neck or bridge, but Alvarez was backed up on warranty work when I'd reached out years ago. So the difference here is if it was a martin, someone would buy it broken and not blink ;)

Good players don't need fancy guitars.

    That's gospel.

And they’re kind of wasted on crummy players. I like them anyway though :)
