For years I have carried a plastic handle Spyderco with no problem. But recently I switched to a steel Kershaw. Unfortunately I have realized that it has now boogered up the backs of two of my guitars while I’ve been playing.

    Beware and heads-up.

Me too. That’s why the knife goes into the pocket when playing.

    Thanks!
    Good to know.
I’m a committed Leatherman Supertool guy.
    It’s my EDC.
It lives on my left hip (amost) everywhere I go.
The holster keeps it off my guitars, but I sometimes carry a clip knife.
I’ll remember tbat next time I use it.

My Gerber stays in my front left pocket. My Leatherman has a case that's on my belt by my right hip pocket.

So if your right handed. You must be clipping it in your front right pocket?

    Switch pockets?

Not a big fan of pocket clips, except on my work overalls. Best to have low profile EDC blades, in the UK, with our (understandable) laws. I don't worry about dings on the backs of guitars. That probably means I'm using the scratched up one more- and it's pretty good. :)

I carry an aluminum-handled Benchmade, clipped in my right front pocket. The knife is inside the pocket, the clip is outside but at the far right edge of the pocket where it cannot come into contact with a guitar in the normal playing position.

Hmm, I’m a lefty who plays right handed. The knives/leatherman I wear on my front left haven’t been a problem, but I’ve busted two cellphones (right front pocket) with my Telecaster in the last year or two.

The only knife I own that came with a pocket clip is one of these. I've had it for about 20 years.

The day I brought it home, I removed and discarded the clip.

Oddly, I don't like anything on or in my pockets when I'm playing. Even if I have to drive to someone's house to play, my wallet, keys and everything go in the case when the guitar comes out.

I prefer a clip-on because old-school pocket knives carried loose in the pocket shortly produce a knife-shaped wear hole in the front of my trousers.

Might be the reason that guy Mark Whatshisname no longer does Guitar of the Day videos? He scratched up too many Rare Guitars with all his zippers, buckles and jewelry?

i usually have one clipped on, but i wear my guitar above waist height and the bottom edge of my vest tends to cover that part of my pocket.

I’ve torn up loads of guitars with the clips on my knives. I just don’t care. They’re tools. Kinda like the knives. Everything seems to dull or scratch or marre something somewhere. Shirt snaps, belt buckles, the floor, knives. What’re ya gonna do?

Yeah, you're right. No tears were shed. But, it was definitely an "Aw, hell......Oh, well" moment.

I don't mind scarred up gear, but by the same token I carry my guitars in my hands instead of dragging them behind me. Honestly acquired battle scars are OK, but things I feel like I should've known better about do bother me a bit...but not for long.

You could always clip it on to your strap if you must have it on you.
A knife in plain sight says “ hey all you ne’er-do-wells don’t ask a million questions about my set up after the show”

(Exclaimer) this works best with a Bowie and a croc skin hat
