PRRI Speaker Choice

Though it's been out of the rotation for a bit, this morning I fired up the PRRI LTD with the factory Celestion G10 aboard and once again am impressed. Telecaster, curly cord, volume at 8......and away we go! The G10 is a ceramic magnet speaker and I am wondering what an alnico replacement might do for the tone. Anyone running an alnico with a PRRI? I do know there are textbook differences between the two but I wonder how that translates to what we hear in the real world.......... Anyone?

Hi!
...The G10 is a ceramic magnet speaker and I am wondering what an alnico replacement might do for the tone...
I think the type/build of speaker is more important than the magnet-material.
For instance, a Jensen C10R and P10R sound more similar than different ;)
Afaik, there´s no current AlNiCo-speaker similar to the Celestion Ten 30, so it´s hard to compare...

cheers - 68.

I had a reconed CTS alnico 10 in a non reverb Princeton. When compared to a ceramic C10Q it had more chime at lower volume levels and became thicker, smoother and compressed at higher volumes or when pushed with an OD.

Generality: To me alnico always sounds thinner. But it can be real nice for some things and leads especially.
As far as 10" go, I have never heard anything better than a 'Weber 10F150T 50W, undoped or light dope' in a PR.
You'll think you're playing a Vibroverb!

It's really hard to quantify what exactly alnico compression feels and sounds like, so if you're curious, you're just going to try for yourself. Generalizations like "darker" or "smoother" aren't really valid or applicable, because these types of characterizations have much more to do with the construction of the cone and voice coil. For me, alnico is really all about the compression at high volume levels - like, running the amp wide open - so if you don't regularly get a chance to open your amp up, it probably isn't worth dropping all the extra money on an alnico speaker. I typically prefer ceramics in BF/SF circuits anyways (usually alnico for tweed), but the Weber 10A125 did sound pretty nice in my SF Princeton. Not as nice as the 10F150T, though.

The first section of this FAQ should help:

Thanks for the input, gentlemen!
The Weber 10F150T is touted by many as the speaker for a Princeton........I suspect there is good reason for that. I'll have to investigate further. With a 15W amp, wouldn't the 25W version of this speaker be the right one?

I will say the TV Jones Classic Plus in the bridge position of my Collings Statesman is very mid-heavy.....very. The plain-jane Classic in the neck position is just wonderful. If the Weber has a mid bump it might not work well with this guitar, though it's not my number one.

That's what I have, so I'd say...yes. You're not going to get much speaker breakup either way with only 12 watts give or take, but the 25W is more efficient and livelier due to the lighter cone.

I really like the WGS Warehouse Veteran 10 in my PRRI.

However, in terms of 10" alnico, I have a 2x10 Deluxe Reverb kit from Weber, with a 10F150 and a 10A125 pair in it... great sound. So I bet a 10A125 would be worth looking at for a single 10 Princeton.

I have a PRRI Silverface that came with a Greenback....got a gift certificate with the amp, so used it for a 10" Gold, and it sounds great to me....will never swap it out for anything different

I use a Jensen P10R. I almost gave up on it at first, but once it was broken in I began to appreciate it more. Now it's staying in there. I loved the JBLs I've used in the past, but they add a lot of weight and that's a factor now.

I'm surprised the Eminence GA10 SC64 crowd hasn't chimed in yet.....
I like my 65PRRI stock speaker just fine....
Yes I thought the SC64 Illuminati would have sensed this thread immediately.

I’ve got a 12” PRRI that input a WGS G12Q in. I just wanted something inefficient but it’s turned out to be a really great match. Cannot complain.
