I got some #8 stainless 1 and 1/2 " long, but it doesn' t leave much to screw into the neck.

Maple is hard and should hold the screws well, I guess. But what is the standard size?

Check your local boating supply stores, places like West Marine, etc. who carry stainless # 8s in 1.75 inch length, oval topped phillips head.

1.625 for Squier Affinities, Squier 51s, thinner bodied Teles. That I do not know where to duplicate.
