    - Most of the universally agreed upon benchmarks for “perfect” guitar tone were created with off the shelf gear plugged in with cheap cables.

    - With few exceptions, no popular band or artist has ever put out their best work after getting off drugs or giving up drinking.

    - Most bands or artists have at most one truly great and about 2 or 3 pretty good albums in them.

    - All modern music doesn’t suck, you’re just old.

    - Every guitar, amp, and pedal will sound completely different once you get it home.

    - Any rock autobiography stops being interesting about 2/3rds of the way through.

    - It is, in fact, better to burn out than to fade away.

    - The chords & notes don't mean a thing; listen the rhythm, listen to us sing.

    I’d say those two are related. If we’re hearing about artists getting clean it’s typically after they’ve been around a while.

    General premise accepted, but: Exhibit 1 Bonnie Riatt, sober, still delivers the goods;
    Exhibit 2 Keith Richards, sober, still pushin & pulling on the rhythmic pocket;
    Exhibit 3 Amy Winehouse - oh yeah, she's not touring anymore...
    :cry:

    But generally, I get yer point.

    Peace - Deeve

    New gear rarely makes someone a better player or even gives better tone. Most of the time the only problem new gear solves is how to melt a credit card or deplete savings.

    1000 hours spent practicing will pay off far more than 10,000 bucks spent on gear.

    Chances are one in four in the band addicted maybe. One in five definitely at least one addict. I thought when I got older this would change but sadly no. As far as perfect tone. Great iconic songs were recorded with equipment that was available at that time, so it should be no surprise that that sound is what is considered good.

    There is no greater waste of time, energy, or money, than chasing after the perfect tone — except perhaps chasing after someone else’s tone.

    Not sure exactly how it fits here, but it seems appropriate for the way.

    my al time favorite lyric:

    Shouting the poetic truths of high school journal keepers”

    Most pop and rock supposed 'live' concert recordings are studio enhanced

    Way beyond normal EQ and such

    Practice time available and money available for new gear are often unrelated.
    But to paraphrase an old Marstercard commercial if you buy new gear and it inspires you to play more and you enjoy it more that is "priceless".

    The only trouble with that is that when you get older it seems you have more money to spend than time. :confused:
