I've been DVRing the new season of Portlandia, and have noticed a very obvious level of advertising. It was more obvious to me because of the recent mention in the X-Files thread. But in this case, it's definitely deliberate and over the top, presumably due to the nature of the show itself.

They're not placements really, more like full on advertisements blended in with the show. So far I've seen a GEICO and Suburu spot as a commercial with the character of Fred, Dos Equis shown a few times and mentioned, and Tree Ripe orange juice, with a very flashy commercial like "video"? I guess. It reminds me of the phony commercials on SNL, but these are real products.

Back at Christmas time, there were a bunch of Old Navy commercials with some of the recurring characters...so I guess they had it planned to start doing this. I think it's pretty brilliant, as the show is spoofing everything under the sun, now they've added advertising in the mix, while actually getting the advertising in. Hey, I might even try some of that orange juice on my next shopping trip! :p

This definitely seems to be the era of selling out. I've been noticing a lot of odd ad placements, like watching "Treehouse Masters" and the guy starts pitching a GMC truck right in the middle of it.. and A-list celebs selling out these days, movie stars used to go to Japan to do shameless commercials, now they're all over the place pitching everything from acne medication to furniture collections.

It doesn't have to be obvious - that probably depends on the level of funding the product-pushing company wants to give. The company I work for constantly has products placed in TV shows and movies, but they are never mentioned. They are just there in the background of different scenes - I see them all the time. Sometimes an actor will use one of them as part of the script, but again, it's never mentioned - it's just incorporated into the scene as part of the plot.

Please note the make of police cars on the Andy Griffith Show and a series built around two guys driving a new Corvette down Route 66.

"Selling out"? I don't think so. TV has always been foremost an advertising medium.

I don't think it's selling out either. It was always a thing. I remember seeing Pepsi cans in plain view in movies like ET and Back to the Future, and tons of other infamous sponsors. You were always aware of something being advertised in a nonchalant way. And if they didn't advertise but wanted to use a product, , you'd see a can of Pepsi look like something called Pepzi or have the name obscured in some way. I just think Portlandia is spoofing heavier on it this season, as that is the nature of the show!

I remember when I worked for an automotive parts company, we would
get asked about paying for placement in a particular scene, or, they would ask or competitor. Many times we said ya,.go ask them..

I think they usually already made the film, and were coming back after watching it.

It is interesting now, the new viagra or incontenance ad that has an older band
in it, has all the amps blackened and all the head stocks blackened.
