    Date the Rat

I have an old big box Rat. It stopped working and I took it apart. I removed the circuit board from its mounts and on the "other" side of the circuit board I found a date (day/month/year) and the printed phrase "Fuzztones For the Connoisuer." Someone else did fix it--bad battery clip.

    Hope this helps!

I still have the one I got for Christmas when I was fifteen. It is one of the very early ones.

It is loud and bright, which is what a Rat is supposed to be. I still use it occasionally.

Maybe something here can help you. I can't imagine that the potentiometers don't have a date code on them. Especially if they are CTS, which in the few that I've seen cracked open all of the older ones housed CTS pots.

    For Example, "1378412"
Date Code: 137 = CTS, 84 = Year Produced, 12 = week of that year.

You may just find some extra info from the snapshots, and collected info found on these 3 ebay ads: '81,'83,'94.

Given LarryR's link up above, yours is probably anywhere from '83-'87. If the Logo looks like this>
[IMG], then its a later '83, you did say small box too...

It seems that your serial number is a little on the high side. So that will probably help push it up into the later '80s. Plus its logo would also most likely be the opposite of that picture shown, the "RAT" would be white. The circuit would be the original, and it would be an FET based buffer.

the logo looks a little different...the Proco is on the front of the box and there is no border around the words rat....but everything else is the same...same size...same knobs and labels for the knobs

I wish I could help you more. By the looks of that picture it may be a RAT 2. I know you said that it doesn't have an LED, but the entire graphic layout appears to be like the RAT 2's, which would have a LED in the center of the "A", and the paint for the controls is suppose to be luminescent.

LarryR's Rat Guide states that the RAT 2 started production in 1987.

    "Rat 2
    NONE BJT? Silicon Y DPDT
True Bypass Narrow Heavy Gauge Steel
    H 73mm x D 103.2mm x W 79.4mm
    luminous/glowing Markers
    Labelled: "RAT"
and "pro co" on edge face
RAT is in white LED Rat
    Slight differences to original circuit
    1987-
    Bat: 3mA"

    Check it out.

The only thing I can suggest is to crack it open again, and look for date codes on the potentiometer's cases.

I know you want to know the date and more about it, but I guess the most important thing now is if you like the sounds you can get from it.
