After watching this video, I think I'm hooked on the idea of building a '40s circuit. It sounds more lo-fi than the '50s models, but in such a cool way.

6SC7's, I'm coming to get ya!

Yeah, this is why I really like the idea of some of those circuits @Jerry garrcia has been building.

I’ve done a few octal builds last year, with the he help of @printer2 , @andrewRneumann , @2L man and others.
Haven’t built an all loctal amp yet so I can’t give a verdict on the sound of it. It’s on my to do list though. Just for fun.
You have a a lot of different options there.
I’ll go preamp 6SL7 and 6Sc7 (have too many at home so I’ve used them also in the PI position since I’ve got a source in Sweden that sold me non microphonic NOS RCA 6SC7 for 5-10$ a piece).
You could also use the 6SL7 in the PI position, doesn’t really matter.
There is a different “tone” between the 6SL7 and 6SC7 so you will hear a difference between the channels but both will sound good.
Both have a gain of 70 so if you really want the same gain (don’t think you will here the difference) as a 12ax7 you could use a 6SQ7 or a 6SF5 that both has a gain of 100. Unfortunately they are both single Triodes.
A 6SQ7/6SC7 and 6SL7 preamp which will save you some money since the 6SQ7 is cheap. But then you’ll have an input over. Add an 5-55K NFB pot? Go hi/low on one of the tubes?

Thanks for the info, that's a great price for the 6SC7 tubes too, considering they're pre-tested for microphonics.
