This one likely won’t be finished in the time frame, either.

Here are a couple pics of how it’s starting off.

Got the body roughed out yesterday.

Then started gluing one of the pickguards back together.

A word of caution, don’t use 3M double stick tape with the red film between your template and walnut.

The walnut will break on the grain lines due to the incredible strength of the 3M tape.

The pic shows the last piece being glued back in. 09CB4DC9-D87B-47EE-93F9-71F2806AF0B3.jpeg F0CFCED9-43A1-4920-8627-7DCA6D88BF86.jpeg D7F2850C-3AA1-426F-A027-082C157DF439.jpeg

That's what happens with a cheap bit on a battery router.
I spent some time on it last night and got the neck pocket sorted.
And started smoothing the body rout.
I'll get some more pics tonight.
The previous photo shows less than acceptable routing, which proved discouraging.
Fortunately, I always stay back from the line and finish up with a sander.
Time to source the rest of the parts.

That is shaping up! I like the grain on that.

When you want to cut super-clean routs and you can apply 90-degree corners to your design, a dead-easy way to make a router template is to edge-glue thin wood panels (1/2" thick is good). You can slap one of these together in about three minutes using a table saw or chop saw and gel CA.

It doesn't have to be three pieces like this one; it can be just two pieces to help you make make perfect 90-degree corners.

Make these large enough to allow room for clamps (if you're not using DS tape) or your router base will bump into the clamps.

You can move a template made like this and re-clamp it so it's aligned with previous cuts to make many different sizes of cutouts.

Do you guys prefer DS tape over masking tape on both pieces + CA glue between the tape? I have never had great success with any brand of DS tape.

I prefer double sided tape, mostly for the speed and convenience, and I don't have to worry about getting CA on my workpiece. I use spectape or the stuff from Philly Luthier supply - the stuff you can tear with your hands

When possible I screw templates to the work piece with flat head screws into parts of the body that will be routed later (neck pocket templates gets screwed into pickup routes, pickup templates get screws in their mounting holes). If I have to double sticky tape a template down I use carpet tape and back that up with a clamp because I don't trust it, to remove I wave a heat gun at the template until it pops off.

It looks like I'm going to put this one on the back burner for a while.
I picked up a Jaguar kit from a member on a different forum.
I'm a bit excited since I've never tried a Jag before.
Pics and more coming once it actually gets here.

I'm a long way from knowing what I'm doing, but so far I have been making my working templates very big, as big as the body itself, and using clamps to hold it down. I just don't trust tape.
