I’ve always found most of the Les bursts beautiful. And I love the old strats with the really loud “old car” colors. They just don’t represent my personality. I could maybe see myself using a red Strat, Tele or SG. But not likely.

    Sorry for the hijack.

That is it! That binding is a nice touch. I don't like the "relic" thing, but that is another topic entirely. :-D Looks great to me otherwise.

the very first production Esquire was black, so yes.

Teles from the 50s that have custom paint finishes are impossibley rare, but they do exist. A bit more common but still very rare starting in 1959 and later.

Black would have been an option, for sure. I know there are, in particular, custom color Teles from the trade shows in 1952 that still exist and are in museums and private collections. Probably the most known from the 50s is the copper finish, and in the 60s, Fiesta Red.

I think Roy Gallagher had a black 1959 Esquire.

Sorry, it looks like he had it refinished in Black. It was originally blonde.

The Duchossoir book lists black as a tentative color for the 1950 Esquire.
Black became a regular production color in 1960 and continued through at least 1970.
That seems to agree with a lot of posts here

I understand the posting question is a Black Telecaster, however find it difficult to understand how the 'owner' could so effectively de-value the $ sale price of the instrument by leaving a Woodie Wood Pecker chip the front face by the binding

It also confirms that the person responsible has little or worse, no understanding of the results of genuine wear patterns thru years of playing

I've seen pics of Roy Buchanan from the early '60s with a black maple board Tele. I can't vouch that it was a Fender finish, but Roy didn't really mod much.

Maybe that guitar was attacked by a mean hungry cat? LOL
