I lose power maybe once a year. it usually come back is under an hour. but... we've had things knock out power for 2-3 days... usually in the winter of course. I put a standard 120 plug end on the power to my boiler. when the power goes out and it looks like it'll be out for a while I fire up my generator, run an extension cord into the house and plug in the heat, a couple lights, the internet and the TV (for news). the fridge gets cycled... on for 20 minutes or so (until it quits running) then off for an hour or so. all that can be done with 2000 watts easy. I did a 3 day some years ago with a Coleman 1800

We've seen single digits to teens today while visiting with family in Birmingham, AL. My niece's dog was loving it, lying down on the dead grass in the yard. He's a Great Pyrenees mongrel. I argue that dogs like him are far better evolved for this climate than we are. You can get pretty smug when you have GoreTex and PolarTec, but dogs go swimming in this weather.
