I don't know exactly why, but whenever I hear, "potato salad", it always reminds me about this song:

Another camp to consider.....do you leave the potatoes "chunky".....or mashed? It's odd, I never cared a lot for potato salad until I had some from a Bratwurst shop thirty years or so ago. They mashed their pot salad, like thick whipped potatoes. Of course mustard, egg, pickles, and onions. They're long gone, now, but I still remember it. Today, if I have chunky potato salad, I mash it up as best I can.

So many styles and options to choose from. I'd say think about what the main meat items are to be cooked, then pick one that matches them. Like you would with a fine wine.

Not all call for a mayo element, but when they do....

I've only made it a couple times... I love the stuff, but my boy won't touch it, and momma is pretty iffy on it too. We get decent tater salad from the local grocery Publix (I like the redskin salad).

Seems the critical issue is cook time... it's easy to overcook the taters for tater salad. You want them cooked but firm. Too mooshy, and they'll disintegrate when you stir everything together. Tater variety must factor in... I'm guessing Yukon Golds would be good for tater salad. But as I said, I am not experienced in these matters.

    Taters matter.

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. :)
Would it "sound" better to you if we called it "creamy"?.....or "blended"?....or even "whipped?

Big Fan. Miracle Whip, 6 hard cooked eggs, celery and onion, salt, and pepper. That's it.

    No eggs please.
German (vinegar) potato salad is excellent!
My wife makes a potato salad with balsamic vinegar and feta cheese crumbles that is amazing.... The secret ingredient is (I think) a little blood orange flavored olive oil. Wonderful stuff!
Oh and chunky potatoes please, not mashed.

There's a popular local BBQ place here, everyone raves about their potato salad. I think the secret is that it has Ranch seasoning in it. Ugh. I'm tired of the Ranch n a z i s ruining everything.

That olive oil sounds awesome. I prefer vinegar to creamy potato salad, too.

Yep, I made a batch this morning for tomorrow.... FWIW, no egg, French's yellow mustard, Hellman's Vegan (bur, I will be eating real BBQ) mayo, minced celery, minced onion, minced carrot, minced dill pickle and a little black pepper...

Got butter beans cooking in the slowpot...
