"Always on My Mind" is a good song, but it's not what I'd want to hear in this situation: "Sure, I didn't do anything, but it's the thought that counts, right?" That said, if this song brought your lady back, who am I to criticize your choice of songs?

I Love You a Thousand Ways is an inspired choice, one of my favorites.

First one that popped into my head, some pretty nice Tele work too.

This one's a bit oblique, but same deal (and more Tele!). One of my all time favorite lyrics, easily my fave Spoon song.

I think Willie cops to screwin' up pretty bad in that one, no? "If I made you feel second best, girl I'm sorry I was blind... little things I should've done and said, I just never took the time, etc..." that's a brutal lyric imo.

Yeah, not one of my favorite Willie songs either. Kind of agree with blowtorch up there... these songs can get cloying/whiny pretty quick.

that's the way it is with things of this nature

you could sing about how hot she is, but women tend to see through noble intentions so modestly expressed

another approach is to sing about killing yourself, which can bring out their maternal side

a good honest and hearty "I effed up I'm sorry" goes a long way though

I would say this fits the bill, though I recall when this song came out how many women I heard saying how much they hated it. Primarily for the lyric

    I never loved her
    I never needed her
She was willing and that's all there is to say

    And then

Please forgive me and forget it
I was wrong and I admit it
Why can't we talk it over
Why can't we forget about, forget about the past

I always thought it was just a lousy tune in general.

I liked it back then, pretty shlocky 30+ years on though, no doubt. Forgot that lyric completely.
