Maybe, but doubtful. More than likely for the picture.
Wholesale harvest back then. People did not know better.
I remember when I was in my early 20's, I was remodeling a department store and when I got off... it was hot and summer and I went to get a beer at one of the places on the river... and someone had caught a HUGE sturgeon and the bar offered free steaks! It was fantastic! So, I HOPE those guys at it and harvested the eggs (caviar) if there was some...
this is more what makes me smile... but, hey! different boats, different floats!
No. For meat. Wholesale harvest requires a market. At the time of the picture there were about 10000 people spread over an area about 4 times the size of Connecticut. Fish doesn't keep to ship through the desert by horse drawn wagon.
I'm sorry I was using "wholesale harvest" to mean as a tongue in check phrase, for mass taking of animals simply for sport.
Fish, buffalo, deer, any animal. I've seen the photos of 100s of animals piled or hung up and all the hunters proudly posing with them. Whole herds and species completely removed from areas.
I'm no tree hugger, or animals rights activist. But I am glad that we are now doing game management.
1st pic doesn't go far enough.
