Yeah, the "ll" doesn't get the Spanish "ya."
Really, it isn't Portillos. It is easy to make a good Beef sandwich and or Hot dog. THat is why in Chicago, you will find folks attached and particular to a local Hot Dog/Beef stand. There are SOOOO many in Chicago.

Johnnie’s is the best in my opinion as well... there’s one in Arlington Heights too. Just north of 90 on Arlington Heights Road. Italian ice isn’t too shabby either. I might have to take a drive over there tonight for a watermelon ice.
But the LL does make an L sound in Italian.
They are building a new one about 10 miles from me, and there is one near my work in Scottsdale. I've only tried a Chicago style hot dog, but that was pretty decent. Some of the guys I work with like the Italian beef.
One opened in Tempe around 2014 when I was living there. Chow was pretty good, but I can't take the cheeseball atmosphere. I got into that stuff years back in Chicago, and I prefer the low key establishments that I'd go to there.
So, it was back to Ted's for the post jam session chow-down.
Love their chocolate cake.
Chicago Dogs and More is near me in Mesa. It was here when I moved here 12 years ago and still going strong.
too bad there couldn't be a telecaster meet up in the parking lot of a Portillos. Kind of like those classic car clubs meetings, but just random tele dudes and dudettes, wearing satin jackets that say "Tucson Tele Tigers" and "Cali-Casters," staring at other people's tricked out teles on guitar stands in the parking lot...

He has partially redeemed himself of late, but is still considered only one rung above Piers Morgan, a man for whom the word 'Countryside' was redefined. Think how the 'country' part is pronounced, then think 'cide' for 'side' and you get the idea.

I am in the Chicagoland area—Portillo’s is a staple, but as many have said, there are better beef sandwiches at smaller shops. There are better hot dogs at smaller shops. There are better burgers at smaller shops. But there’s nowhere that does them all at a high level like Portillo’s. And none of them have that chocolate cake, nor do they have that chocolate cake PUT IN TO A CHOCOLATE SHAKE. Your mind will be blown.
Anywhere in the East Valley you recommended? I like Luke’s, but don’t make it into Phoenix often.
Portillo's opened here about the time I moved here from Illinois. I hadn't found any local places that served a decent Italian beef sandwich. Portillo's is decent but I wouldn't call it great. One of my favorites in Illinois was in the far northwest tiny town of Volo called Fratello's.

What is that golden-browned, poison looking thingy surrounding the beef and peppers?
Although I've lost any taste for bread like that, I do miss the convenience and quick-meal possibilities a sandwich offers. However, remove the bread and there's not a lot of food left over. Add to that, I really can't eat fries or chips either. Or rice. A few are fine, but much more than that...
It sucks being me.

Ditto what @Unionjack515 said. I would love to see a Portillo's open up down here just for the Italian Beef sandwiches. It's the one Chicago food I miss the most in the south. There are a couple of places around Atlanta that sell them, but they're nowhere near as good.
Looks good. Is that about the same as Al’s Beef?
