I know there's tons of these in Illinois, and they are sprinkled elsewhere also.

We had one open in my town a few months back, and it's taken this long for the hype to die down enough to check it out. I had the italian beef sandwich with peppers. AMAZING

but I think I gained like three pounds.
Oldest son also loved the beef sandwich, and he was amazed also. My youngest son had a burger which he said was "ok", he's looking forward to trying the beef next time. I see they have all kinds of delicious looking options:

    Have you tried Portillos?

I like Portillo's. One opened up near us a year or so ago. I get the Italian sausage with onions and mustard. I don't remember what they are called but, they are fantastic.

I love that place, but I usually just get a burger or dog. I still go even after it gave the in-laws a stomach bug. It’s that good.

Next time get the Chicago Hot Dog and report back to us. I like to live vicariously through others.

    I love Portillos.

If you get the Italian beef sandwich one visit then you temper by getting a chop salad on the next visit.

The chop entree salads are super healthy.

Actually, that’s pretty much what the sandwich looks like in real life. There’s not much to them, but they are delicious. I haven’t been to the Arizona location yet. Double order of hot giardiniera peppers for me.

Edit: I’m in Philly right now, so I won’t type this out loud, but I’ll take a Chicago Beef over a Philly steak any day of the week.:D

The website says they all have themes. The Madison theme states "50's 60's diner." Did it live up to that?

Having grown up in Chicagoland I’ve been eating Portillo’s for a long time. I honestly don’t think they’re as good as they used to be and that was before the business was sold. It’s definitely not the same place as it used to be with the new ownership. I was in the Schaumburg location a while back and it was filthy. With all that said I still eat there occasionally.

in the way that, if you could travel back to a busy urban train station from that time, and there was a large open cafeteria-style unassuming diner right there, yeah, absolutely

I grew up in Chicagoland and Pre-Portillos, there were small shops that served Italian beef and Chicago style dogs everywhere. There a few Portillos here in the Phoenix area now, but there are also mom and pops owned by Chicago transplants. I prefer those.

I'm in Chicago often and eat at the one in the city occasionally. I also eat at the one in Buena Park, California and it is not entirely as good as Chicago. But I still go there! But my passion is Johnnies Beef in Elmwood Park. I am taking my sister there in July when I am in Chicago. Love me some Italian beef sammies.

What I wouldn't give right now for an italian beef sandwich and a fresh Lime Rickey. Even a Green River would be okay. Drool.

His OK burger is superior to IN/OUT any day of the week. Next time try a Combo! Beef and sausage.

Where are the MA PA's There is Luke's in Phoenix. Most of the Dog stands don't last long here cause folks would know a good sandwiches if it bit them and dragged them down the street. Their burgers are SUPERIOR to IN/OUT.
