One thing my huge bunch of guitars has going is, if the radius is 7.25 then the wire is 6230 and if the radius is 9.5 or larger then the wire is larger than 6230.

And so, it would really be hard to know how much of what I feel is 7.25 and how much is the fretwire size.

And then there's fall away and the extent to which the wire size is clouded by how much finish is on the fretboard - and how much material has gone away doing fret levels, crown and polishes.

I think many people dislike a 7.25 they might've played because the fretwork was buggered or was worn down through use and lost in the poly. IMO, almost all 7.25 necks that fret out are because someone didn't do their job right or the fretwork is worn out. And likewise, those of you with bad experiences with conical or compound radii, probably found a neck that was not properly executed. The best playing necks I have are these Conical Radii, super soft V necks with 6125 that Tommy Rosamond and his staff made for me.

I think that's an excellent point Roscoe. Radius, by itself, is only 1 part of how a neck will feel. Reminds me of trying to judge pickups by output alone; it's only part of the story.:)

I think the neck section is maybe 3 times more important than the neck radius. So long as we're talking about 7.25 at one end and maybe 12 or 10-16 at the other end.

As far as pickups go, if I can just get people not to assume that two pickups with the same resistance reading, must be similar, I feel like I've done a lot.

Ya never know until ya give it a try :).

I grew up with the 7.25" Vintage Fender radius and that's just what felt "right" to me.

As I got older, the 12" Gibson radius started to really feel good for playing higher up on the fretboard, but still didn't feel quite right for playing chords in the open position.

So, I've bounced between those two radii (and points in between) for 50 some years.

But, ya never know until ya give it a try ;).

The way I've got my neck/fretboard radius jig set up right now (7.25" and 10" templates) gives me a neck with a radius of 7.5" at the nut and 10" at fret #21.

I used a little different wire on this neck (Jescar 51-100) than I'm used to, as well.

I am absolutely loving this neck and the easy way it plays.

It rises to the top of all the necks I've played (and there have been more than a few :)).

So now I'm faced with another question -

Would I like a compound radius that ranges from 7.5" to 11" or 12" even more?

Only one way for me to find out :).

I expected 9.5" radius to be the most popular. What I didn't expect was how many people like 7.25".

    This is a trick question.

First I picked "Don't care". Now I just noticed there is an option "I like everything", so I changed my vote to include both of the options.

But now I see four radii are also included, and you can pick up to four. So I could pick the ones I encountered instead. I don't think I've played one with a 10" radius, but I'm quite sure I played some with a bigger radius than 12". Actually that wouldn't work out, because I would probably like 10" because I like all the others, so I would need five options.

Given it's a guitar forum though, I bet there are lots of people who like 9.5" and hate 10".
