Looking for a couple of good sounding but cheap hb sized P90s. They're going into an LP style guitar. I will probably use it for slide playing and open tuning, so they should be a bit sweet, a bit gritty.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Roswells for 35 bucks a piece. There are even cheaper ones out there, but I don't know if I trust nonames from ebay. If you guys have any suggestions however, I might give it another thought.

+1! IMHO, one of the better sounding HB-sized P90s out there, regardless of price (and I've tried a bunch).

The regular Artecs are dirt cheap. No experience, but I don't think you can mess those up. I know, they're not the same size and construction as regular P90s, blah blah blah...

Yeah, they're not exactly like a P90 in tone, but they are close enough.

I have a pair of Duncan Phat Cats in an Agile LP clone, and they sound really good. But they're pricey.

The GFS Mean 90 is a wonderful pickup. It's so good, Reverend has issued several models with them as stock equipment. Here's one--a Reverend Volcano H90 (humbucker bridge, Mean 90 neck). It sounds fantastic:

    .

Hit Ebay and sort for P90 pickups under $20/set. Better than the GFS models (muddy).

I actually like that the Mean 90 doesn't nail how an actual P90 sounds. To my ear, it has less mids and more top end, which makes it kind of like a nice marriage of actual Fender single coil with a P90.

If I really was insisting on 100% legit P90 sounds, I'd probably just step up to a guitar that was routed specifically for them. But my situation is typically a twist on that - I've got a guitar routed for a pair of humbuckers, and I want more open tones, but w/o really trying to replicate how Strat single coils sound.

...The fact that the Mean 90s are less than $40 is just a big bonus. They're my favorite GFS pickups. I can pass on just about everything else that GFS offers, but not the Mean 90s.

I'll also add though that their Surf 90s really nail the Dearmond vibe- bright and CLEAN

As someone who's actually played Mean 90s for a few years, I'll clearly state that they simply don't sound muddy to me. If anything, I like that they have pretty nice trebles, and a little bit of a dip in the mids.

The Mean 90s also sport alnico magnets. Not sure that the $20/sets on eBay will have anything other than ceramics. That's not to say that ceramic magnet pickups automatically sound bad, but IMO the alnico mags in the Mean 90s is part of what makes them sound so good.

Iron Gear in the UK make the Alchemist 90, which I've been meaning to try. It's a good price. Not sure if they're available stateside
