Hi, y'all. I received a Fender Mod Shop handle last month that checked a lot of boxes but the nut was cut improperly causing some buzzes that could not be fixed through adjustment. So I dropped it off at Straight Frets for a replacement and couldn't be happier with the result.
Here is the video of the PLEK tool measuring and cutting the new nut to match the frets. Enjoy!

    Awesome.

I wished we had a PLEK tool service around here locally.

It's really cool and I've spent a lot of time with automated tools so I'm glad they sent me the video. Straight Frets is a super small step-down shop. The owner had a workshop built at his home to house the larger machine. I've seen videos of frets being ground by the tool but never seen a nut being shaped.
I have a couple guitars that were factory Plekd but never personally had it done.

    Nice!

I had Danny at Straight Frets do a refret and Plek on my 1963 Tele a couple of years ago. Super nice guy to work with, and he did a great job. My Tele plays like a dream now (first refret it ever had, and it sorely needed it).

And yeah Killing Floor, his "shop" is interesting!

    Cheers,
    Doug

I used to be a PLEK skeptic. I thought “I’m sure it’s very nice, but is it really any better than I can do on my own if I really take my time and do my best work?”

FWIW- I do really nice fretwork. That’s not just my opinion. Everyone I’ve done work for has said the same.

I purchased two guitars last year that came PLEK’d from the factory. I have no trouble admitting that the machine’s work is far superior to my own. Or anybody else’s I’ve ever been exposed to.

It’s nothing short of absolutely amazing. From now on, if I buy a guitar I plan to keep long term, I will spend the extra to have it PLEK’d. Because it’s worth it.

    I had a friend PLEK'd a few months ago.

He was always a little nuts, but now he's to-the-bone nuts!!

And yet, we all clicked on it.

And yet, we still would have clicked on it.

I have no problem imagining PLEK doing a nice job on a nut.

I had 1 guitar PLEKKed and have bought 2 that were factory PLEKKed - nice jobs on all of them.

Yep. I only needed a new nut. He checked the frets. So that wasn’t too much. I can solder and turn a screwdriver but nobody should trust me with files.

Ben and Aaron at Strange Guitarworks are my local go-to guys; highest recommendation.

Seems about the going rate. I think Roscoe / B3 charges about $225 too.

Glad it all turned out okay, it could have just as easily have gone the other way. (what other way?) I have no idea, it just sounded good to me at the time.
