Buy a Gretsch! I’ve got two of their Electromatic line and they are absolute killers! Fender has been knocking these out of the park.

I picked up a used G5220. First chambered guitar and first Gretsch. I fell in love! It’s an amazing axe for the money.

Just bought my second Gretsch and first big bodied semihollow as my first was a Tele Thinline. G5655TG in Orange stain drooooool... I love the scale as it keeps those wires tight and clear.

So if you’re looking for something different, I can’t recommend these new Electromatics highly enough!

Been trying to decide which one to get myself. I'm after a Jet model. Glad to hear you like them so well. Those are both beautiful guitars!

That would be great! My only hope is that @d barham's wife will be able to Jedi Mind Trick my wife into buying me one.

Great pair! FMIC has done a good job since partnering up, but it’s still Gretsch doing GreTscH :)

    The next thing you know....

Fender markets and distributes Gretsch, but Gretsch is still its own entity and determines the manufacturing and development of their products.

Congrats on your Gretsch guitars. They are great. I have 6 electromatics and 2 pro lines at the moment.

I’ve REALLY wanted to like gretsch, but.... the ones I played I just didn’t dig the sound

Maybe something like these will do it
I have a guitar with dynasonics and I do like it, so maybe if I get one and swap pickups
Although...I usually like to buy guitars that I like the sound of

AND may I add, both are really pretty guitars. You won't stumble on that sound just anywhere.

Yup...I lurked on Reverb for some time, but picked up my G5230T and FSR G5245T (a modded G5232T) at bargain prices. (I did nearly as well on the Streamliners, buying a SDoD and a demo).

I have always loved the orange/gold hw combination...my Dad had a similar one for a period of time in the '60s---impressionable young minds:twisted:.

What guitar do you have with Dynas?

I have played most of the types out there, vintage, TVJ, Gabojo, Guild, Gretsch etc. They aren't all the same. So that being said it's a matter of what Gretsch we talking about here? The big three mainstays are Filtertrons, DeArmond/Dynasonics, and HiLotrons. The pickups in Electromatics and Streamliners have been hit and miss. The winners IME, are the discontinued modern DeArmond 2000s and the modern Blacktop Filtertrons. Streamliner pickups are meh, as far as the Gretsch sound goes, but the new staple P90s coming out ("Fidelisonic 90"), which should nudge a little closer to the Dyna sound. Currently a 'wish list' guitar (I no longer have GAS)....

When I was shopping for my 50th birthday gift to myself last year, I waffled for a while between a 5420T and the Vintera Jag. I bought the latter and have regretted that choice basically every day since.

I'll be correcting that mistake soon.

I have a recent 2019 guild starfire with dynasonics
I like the way it sounds

I’ve tried the mik gretschs in the 800 dollar range with filtertron style pickups and didn’t really care for them, I think they were filtertron and not the ones with the plastic covers

    I didn’t care for it

Oh man those are nice. I want a true hollow version of the SF-1 though, with beefier Dynas. The Guild Dynasonics they offer now are nice pickups, I have a set in my Streamliner G2420 posted above. These new Guild Dynas are basic MIK copies of the FMIC DeArmond 2000, which I consider Dyna-lites. Cordoba says these are authentic recreations but this is false, they have a coil resistance that's on the low end, and the magnets are shorter than even T-Armonds. Doesn't mean they're bad of course, but a tall magnet Dyna is something else, especially once they are wound up to 10-12k.

MIK Electros with Blackop Filtertrons or Super HiloTrons (dont be fooled, not a real 'Hilo') both have the basic same coil dimensions as a Filtertron, but feature smaller diameter pole screws and a 1/8" tall Alnico bar magnetm which is 1/4" tall A5 on vintage style pickups. They get in the ballpark of a vintage style Filter, but lack some 'power'. Needless to say, lots of folks get Electros and immediately swap pickups, as it's a good way to get a Proline sound (i.e. truer Gretsch sound) with less money. I've done the same with my Rat Rod and my Fairlane Blue G5420T. I have no experience with 'Blacktop Broadtrons', only that they widened the coil spacing and upped the coil turns, so I'm thinking they are pushing a Gibson-y sound, to attract more potential buyers used to that cra....I mean style. Gretsch can't undercut their own Proline series so they'll likely never offer a HS Filtertron on any Electromatic model any time soon.

Glad to know Gretsch is still making them/having them made. I love the Blacktops! I’m sure they’re nothing like the originals but I’m loving them anyway.

Here's mine, a '67 Rally. It's been through the wars and steers like a tank if you're used to 335 style guitars, but it's a lot of fun!

I like the look, but something about them never sits right with me. I need to just pick one up and play it and fall for it, but never unearth the courage to do it.
