I've become an instant fan of both Tech 21 Fly Rig models. I've played out with the RK5 several times now either straight into a board or in front of my Marshal JCM 900 combo or Vox AC 30. I mainly play in a trio that covers rock, blues, pop, and some reggae. We also do some originals.

It really covers all the bases. I'm toying with the idea of buying a used powered speaker, like a JBL Eon 600 or something similar and really making my rig an all venue, one trip to the stage setup. I have a gig in December outdoors that needs some power without the guitar being mic'd (thus the idea for a powerful powered speaker).

I wonder whether people are actually using them to play out. I've seen many threads were people have either pedal and say it's a great backup to their main rig. Anyone playing out with either pedal? Even better, have any videos to share? I plan on recording my gig in December to share.

Lots of views but no replies. Does that mean no one has used the pedal live or worth commenting on?

I have one and was going to use it live last night, but panicked and brought my normal pedalboard :)

I'm going to use it in practice this week, maybe gig with it on the weekend. I'll let you know

I used to use a sans amp (original) back in the 90's and loved it direct. I currently use an HD500 but the concept is similar.

Normally I have the luxury of having a good monitor system. I get my own monitor with my own mix. But when a monitor situation is questionable, I do exactly what you are looking at doing. I used a small powered mixer into a JBL cabaret monitor (1x12" and a bullet horn).

A single... full range powered speaker would work fine. So do most keyboard amps, acoustic amps and bass amps... As long as it's full range, it will do the trick.

I've played my old GT5, Adrenalinn and TM30 straight into a Mackie SRM 450

Worked absolutely fine with all of those

I"m following this thread. I've been really curious about one of these up for a grab and go board, as my usual rig has gotten too complex and heavy. You can just plug into the receive jack of the AC-30 fx loop, and use the pedal as a preamp, right?

You could run it through the FX loop. I've found that it works better in front of the amp with my AC30. I leave the sansamp on and keep most of the sans amp eq at noon, with minor tweaks for the venue. I find it does little to alter the direct sound of the amp. I like the sound of the drive and boost pedal better when the sans amp is on then when its off. That's why I leave the sans amp on all the time.

If the delay had a subdivision control attached to the tap tempo, I'd be all over the Flyrig 5.

I had a FlyRig 5 but ended up selling it as it was kind of redundant to my Trademark 10. Not really though, and I do kind of miss it lately.

I tried mine straight into an Eon 15 and it had a harshness to it. I just couldn't dial it out. It fatigued my ears. I felt like they just weren't a good pair.

I enjoyed it into the front end of my tube amp where I would just use the boost, DLA and the Plexi. Awesome back up to bring in case the tube amp craps out on you.

Is it possible to turn the speaker simulation off like in the character series? I want to use this in the effects loop return (power amp in) on an older solid state amp using a upgraded speaker.. I'd rather not have speaker sim going into a guitar speaker..id rather just hear the speaker and use the sans amp portion as the pre-amp.. Does that make sense?

You can't turn the speaker sim off. However, it really doesn't add that much color to your amp tone. When I run it in front of my Marshall with the sansamp on it still definitely sounds like a Marshall. Same with my Vox AC30. If you bypass your amps preamp and use the fly rig you'll get the same effect as running it direct, more or less, depending on the sound characteristics of the power amp and speaker combo.

Thanks. After reading more about it, I figured that was the case. I'm sure any coloration is negligible, and if anything it will be a positive effect on the sound.

I have been dying to try the RK Fly Rig. Mostly just to test the RK dirt channel and see if the solo dirt pedal is worth picking up. Glad to hear it is working for some people. Seams like a great solution.

Wonder what happened to the Ibanez UE300?

I have been gigging with my FR5 since I got it (as soon as it was available here in Italy), and always been more than satisfied.
I use it on amps, occasionaly (the Sansamp makes most amps sound even better when activated) but goig direct is my main aim, whenever possibile.
I also bought a Behringer B205D as a personal monitor (I am the only guitar player, and the lead singer too): perfect rig.
I also have a couple of tube amps, but portability and completeness soundwise made the FR5 my main rig, actually.

Just bought a Flyrig 5 ...

... and used it for our last three gigs in December; absolutely love it.

It replaced a Pod XT Live into a Fender Super Sonic 22; much cleaner/more realistic overdrive/distortion with the Plexi setting. Love the boost, and keep the Sans Amp part on always. The delay can do a passable chorus, but was a hassle switching things mid set, even with the extra little rubber grippers (essential!). Added a TC Electronics mini chorus, tuner and Cry Baby, and it works beautifully in my '70s funk cover band; super quiet.

I found going directly into the effects return was NOT good in the SS22, so it goes in front.

Peace.
