I think it was re-necked, (after being damaged) later by Gibson with a LP Custom neck.
I saw/played a replica recently, cool “Chablis” finish!
It had three re-necks, none of them done by Gibson. The 'original' was Gretsch orange. The guitar went 'missing' in the mid '70s never to be seen again.
The Gibson replicas are, basically, R9s with Custom necks, since they didn't have access to the real thing.

Richard Thompson in the Fairport Convention days with a 53 Goldtop. John Martyn ended up with it.

And you can watch John with it in the early 90s:

Two greats!
John Martyn wrote two songs I love, May You Never and Head And Heart.
RIP, and thanks, JM.

Al "Blind owl" Wilson from Canned Heat played a 1954 Goldtop.

The guitar then saw use in the hands of Blind Owl's bandmate Bob Hite after the Former's death.

Here's the guitar as it survives today, it would appear Hite had the wrap around tail replaced with a Tune o matic kinda thing later.

TONS of MOJO on that sucker.

Almost forgot, here's a modern day player using fifties Les Pauls which aren't 'Bursts.

Jared James Nichols.

Here he is holding "Dorothy", a very early Goldtop, which BARELY, survived a ride through a Tornado.

The guitar prior to being restored.

But that's not the only one...

This is his "Ole' red" which again is a goldtop but it was factory refinished in cherry, with the original gold showing at the worn spots.

There's a pic of John McLaughlin playing a black LPC on that back of Inner Mounting Flame that (combined with the bonkers music on that LP) inspired me for years and is why I still own my 70s LPC.

It's entirely in my head, but I am convinced that pic was taken during the guitar solo to this song, which is still one of the greatest solos ever captured IMO.

Mine was my first real guitar and was my main axe for the better part of a decade. I need to dig it out and play it some.

Didn't Gibson do a reissue of '50s LPs about 15 years back?
Seems to me they called 'em "VNOS" or some such acronym.
Supposedly accurate replicas of the ones Bonamassa hordes.
IIRC they weren't cheap at the time - bumping up and often over 3 grand.
I would guess they're twice that now ... but what a great "player" guitar!
It's not a museum piece, so you can play it out ... but be careful.
Most sneakthieves don't know the difference.
That's why my nice acoustics go to gigs in Washburn cases, and my electrics in beat up ones with stickers.

Did I mention, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) used a '54 Black Beauty during recording of NMTB.
Bruce Watson (Big Country) used a '57 Goldtop on the '91 'No Place Like Home' tour and a '55 Black Beauty on the '93 Buffalo Skinners tour.
