Approximately 1700, 4000 of which survive today.Bursts began in 58...I believe, and there were only dozens made that year. A few hundred 59s and 60's right?
I mean, there's not a ton of em around.
I think it was re-necked, (after being damaged) later by Gibson with a LP Custom neck. That's a refinished 'burst.
It had three re-necks, none of them done by Gibson. The 'original' was Gretsch orange. The guitar went 'missing' in the mid '70s never to be seen again.I think it was re-necked, (after being damaged) later by Gibson with a LP Custom neck.
I saw/played a replica recently, cool “Chablis” finish!
Richard Thompson in the Fairport Convention days with a 53 Goldtop. John Martyn ended up with it.

And you can watch John with it in the early 90s:
I've said on more than one occasion that if my life had a soundtrack, John Martyn would feature heavily. Two greats!
John Martyn wrote two songs I love, May You Never and Head And Heart.
RIP, and thanks, JM.

Ray Wylie Hubbard has a gold top. I don’t know if it’s a 50’s or not, but he tells a great story about the guitar in his song called “Mother Blues”, a nightclub in Dallas from a long time ago.
Ronson's wasn't a 50's axe, but a 60's Norlin Lester. A 1968 model, IIRC.Mick Ronson
This isn’t a 50’s which is what the thread title was asking for.Randy Rhoads View attachment 1085363
