Great song, eh? So I wanted to see how anybody plays the descending lead part in the intro. Starts at 0:10 in the video below, then repeats a whole step higher.

So I've got the melody, but can't quite figure out the other note of the double stops. Any ideas?

Man these guys were so good.

I think it's just a third below. If your top note of the first pair is G, the note below it is an E.
    I start it here ... XXX98X

*One of my fave groups along w/Nick Lowe solo.

I slowed it down to 1/2 speed in YT. This is the best I can write it...I didn't bother with the little nuances...you can easily hear those...I'm certain the fingerings are correct. I wish I had a quick camera setup I could post a vid.

Over the progression in 'C' - (edited based on Ken's comment)
    xxx98x
    xxx76x
    xxx55x
    xxx33x
    xx75xx
    xx53xx
    xx32xx
    xx43xx
    xx54xx
    xx32xx
    xx20xx (or x75xxx)
    x23xxx
    x32xxx

Then transpose the same thing up a whole step over the 'D' progression....then it modulates back to 'C' from the G7...

Getting it up to speed is the trick!!

*Edited based on Ken's comment below....thanks Ken!

Top notes of the first four double stops are definitely G F E D.

    It's

    xxx98x
    xxx76x
    xxx55x
    xxx33x

And then the rest that I had spelled out in my first post. I'll go back and amend my previous posts.

    Thanks Ken!

Speaking of Billy's singing, there is a doc on youtube called Born Fighters that is a must watch:

It's really great. These guys just have music pouring out of them. Highlights include:
    • Dave going nuts on a bender doing takes for the "Born Fighter" solo Bonus- about 30 seconds of "The Claw". Starts around 13:00
    • Billy recording his amazing high harmonies for the same song ("Tell ya what. I'll put'em down on all of 'em, Elbow it if you don't like it"). Starts around 21:00
    • A young Albert Lee absolutely burning the house down with solo takes for "Sweet Little Lisa" with Dave full on fanboying in the control room. And, yes that is Huey Lewis and Phil Lynott. Nick Lowes face says "Jesus, that was good" Starts around 39:10
    Teles abound.
