Never really took to them--my dad strummed cowboy chords with his index fingernail when he taught them to me, and when I watched classical music instruction on public television, of course there was no pick there either. Then I got into blues and began to notice that a lot of my favorite guys didn't use them either. I'd be interested to learn about when picks were introduced into guitar playing; maybe after steel string acoustics were Introduced? When you look at African akonting and ngoni players, they use fingers; akonting players do clawhammer, and ngoni players use thumb downstroke and middle finger upstroke.
