I am looking for a diagram for a PJ bass setup that has a 1 vol pot, 1 tone pot, and a 4 way rotary switch. (P alone, PJ series, PJ parallel, J alone)

anybody got any clues? I have a feeling I may need to sign up on a bass forum for this one...

I know nothing about BASS wiring, but that won't be an issue

Is yours like (link removed)? If so which pot would you turn into a rotary?

I think the only way you will solve that conundrum would be by using the push pot that Fender have in their S1 basses.

Here's a link to a Talk Bass thread, this will point you in the right direction.

use a 3-way switch (les paul) or a blend pot with a push-pull or a double-pole on-on mini switch for the series-parallel. There is no difference between bass/guitar wiring besides capacitor and pot values, and even that is a personal choice issue for the most part. You can only activate series while in the middle (both) switch position or blend pot center position. I would love to know how G&L does their series/parallel wiring, and they have diagrams available. Im just too stoopid/lazy to figure their stuff out! Thats Leo Advanced Electronics post-grad level stuff there and Im no electronics tech! Maybe someday........

any 4-way Telecaster guitar diagram will apply. You have to translate it to the pole layout of the roatry switch. FWIW - a PJ, with a well balanced pickup set wired in the standard VVT style can be mighty flexible.

I would recommend that you record a sample of the way the bass sounds now. 1 pickup at a time and then both pickups together. Assuming that the pickups are wired parallel, re-wire then in series and without changing the levels on your recorder, re-record your samples. Listen to them closely - then re-wire for parallel and go back to VVT ...

What you'll find is large differences in volume from one setting to the next and large differences in low end energy as you go from the P or P&J to the J alone - it's pretty rare that the difference will come across as musical... I've done that same basic experiment with a standard J setup, a PJ and also with G&L MFD humbuckers... the series settings have always come across as boomy and muddy to my ear.

The cool thing about VVT is the ability to blend ... it has some quirks to be sure. Pickup loading when both are full up - you get that little volume drop. What I generally do is to setup my rig for both pickups full up , then roll off the J (maye a 1/8th turn) for a dubbier kind of thing or roll of the P about the same to get the burpy, nasal, Jaco J bridge pickup tone if I get a solo spot. Properly worked, VVT is your friend.

It is possible. You could even make it a FIVE way switch, putting the P pickup in parallel (You would have to attach 4-conductor wire to the pickup, modifying it, though). If you are still interested, I can make you a wiring diagram for the switch. It won't look very good, but it will work...

You can definitely do it, I think you'll find it much easier if you look for a diagram for a Jazz Bass instead of a PJ. The wiring is the same but the series/parallel mod is more common in a J.

I have a Jazz set up with a volume, blend, 3 way rotary for series - parallel - off (no tone). The blend is removed from the circuit in series but having it in the parallel mode really gives me the tones I want most of the time as I never like the bridge soloed, always want a bit of neck in there.

I'll second the idea of getting the series/parallel with a push pull or mini switch and retaining the ability to blend.
