Well, this weekend I went for broke and did a serious overhaul on my telecaster.

I took a heat gun to it and scraped off all of the glossy poly finish. I think she shed about 1 pound in weight.

Then I sanded and sanded and sanded some more. I did not use any fine paper because i wanted to keep it kind of rough.

Then I gave it some black stain.

After the stain sat for about an hour I wiped it with mineral spirits and got the old pirate ship finish I was after.

I used tung oil for the finish. I did 3 coats, and she got darker every time, so after the 3rd dried, I decided to leave her alone.

I debated really aging the hardware, but decided just a spray bottle with vinegar, and some sandpaper was enough to get rid of the mirror finish. I was happy with the effect.

While putting it back together today, I decided since I had already removed the capacitor for the tone knob a week or so ago, i might as well take the tone knob out completely.
Now it’s just pickups, selector switch, volume, and input jack.
    She wails!!

    Thanx for looking! 7D580DAF-4161-48BD-97FF-E540634032DE.jpeg D67833BC-A3D3-4794-A337-B59D0B592CEA.jpeg 3D2611DE-FF77-4F60-B12A-FA5A1B4CBDB5.jpeg 2E4B8C61-D64C-49C7-A977-3EE19F66F0CD.jpeg E2ACA3AB-C19B-496B-BC9C-1178912D3782.jpeg EAA7A72F-F413-4395-92D6-61B29CDE8856.jpeg D08CF4D2-0581-4B90-81A1-23DFA4B387F7.jpeg BF7B26A7-9BD5-45E3-9151-72D7875EE349.jpeg

I love it when someone makes a guitar into something personal. Playing it and modding it to your taste, are the very opposite of keeping it stock, polishing it and worrying about re-sale value.

Good work...it reflects your individuality.

    Love it.
Looks like a real workhorse now.
(Of course I don't know what it looked like before, but you know what I mean).

That’s pretty sharp. You need to fill that hole with an eye patch or something.

I stripped a black poly Tele with a heat gun once and then weighed the paint. There was seven ounces of paint on that poor guitar

Thanx! I’ve had it for about 10 years. I always prefer to play for keeps with guitars. I’ll sell a lot of gear, but this guitar will always stay with me.
Here’s what it looked like last July on Friday the 13th.. C6445985-9C96-4365-8BEB-76AF7F132A97.jpeg

    Thanx for the kind words!

Yeah, I never keep anything nice and polished. Except maybe one of my Gretsch’s, but she’s also as far from stock as you can get!
Guitars aren’t a business for me, so I never think of resale value or breaking even etc.

I believe it! This thing has always been heavy, but when I added the bigsby and fat neck, it went up to about 11+ pounds!
    Now it definitely feels lighter.

What’s great is you had some fantastic wood grain to start with - perfect for the pirate ship theme. Nice work!
