So a deal was struck - 2 large slabs of pine from my buddy Simon in exchange for one guitar being built for himself. No worries, I said, this wood had being lying for a few years at his mates house, now it was mine and good for 7 bodies.

2in thick and a few cracks here and there, I cut the width down to guitar body size.

A local Cabernet maker hires out his thickneser to me and I ran both slabs through to get down too 1.75in.

Then, cut out the body slabs.

After preparing one body, I wanted a natural finish which gives me an opportunity to use Tru-Oil, something I've wanted to try for ages.

This is the body with 9 coats on, rubbed with steel wool 00 gauge in-between each coat.

Man, that's really awesome! Is that just regular old southern yellow pine and tru oil? no grain filler or any of the other things I see everyone using?

How much does it weigh btw?

It's Aussie pine with no grain filling. Any cracks were filled with clear glue and sanded flat to retain the rustic appearance. I didn't weigh the guitar but it's fairly light.

Thanks for the comment

Ha! Guess I should read the location before I start yapping eh?

It looks great man! I live in the south and there is yellow pine lumber everywhere, I could probably stumble across some suitable to make bodies from, but I'm terrified of trying to do a finish and having it end up horribly. That tru-oil method looks like even a chucklehead such as myself could do it!

It is an easy option if your unsure about a paint finish. Sand the body and apply around 9 coats of Tru-Oil with a rag rubbing with 0000 wire wool inbetween each coat.

I like the pine down under, it has a very nice looking grain :D. BTW, pine never needs pore filler..............it has no pores ;)

It sure seems like you can never go wrong with a pine body and a colored pickguard. Doesn't really matter what color, although black or white always looks really sharp.
