This is kind of a strat question but I think it applies to all guitars pickups.
I was going through some old pickup sets I had laying around checking them with my ohmmeter. On one set, which are old Fenders, two of the pups measured like 6.3k and the other was measuring around 300k. They're single coil strats by the way.
Now, obviously, the pickup is bad, but I would expect to see an open if it was. What could cause the resistance to skyrocket in a pickup?

Perhaps there's a long in the wires

Sorry for the bad pun content :D I really have no idea what's wrong.

With a resistance reading that high, I would be tempted to check the solder joint on the base of the pickup where the thin wire comes off the coil and is soldered to the eyelet. You may simply have a good pickup with a bad solder joint.

    Telenator,
You hit the nail on the head.
One solder joint looked a little cruddy and when I resoldered it, I have 6.5k ohms. No more astronomical reading.
Thanks for saving the pickup, I wanted to try this set again. They're a 90's set of American Standards for a Strat.
