    It was plastic. I have no theories on why I could hear a difference but I could.

    That’s what makes the Tele unique to begin with- that metal bridge plate the pups sits in IS the Tele sound.

    Anything you add to or take away from affects the overall tone of the guitar. Plastic really doesn't help with tone or sustain. Adding metal parts, depending on the metal and how much material, can affect tone in a good way by accelerating the vibrations and increasing sustain.
