I had the neck of my Guitar off to make a few adjustments and when I put it back on I dabbed a tiny amount of a petroleum oil (grease) on the screws before reattaching the neck. After the fact it occurred to me that I should check to see if grease is bad on bare wood. Well, it's not ideal - so should I back the screws out and apply something else to them or should I just leave well enough alone.
I just have to have something to worry about, ya know?!

I wouldn't worry about it. Next time use whatever wax you have handy, candle, ear or bees.

Thanks - will do. I had the grease handy to lubricate the nut on the truss rod and since it was there I put it on the neck screws too.

Not ideal as it can soften the wood, but I doubt you used very much and it wouldn't be worth it to take it apart to try and clean it out now. I use hobby wax which comes in a small tin to lubricate screws, but any wax will work.

I use household candles, like the white ones you get from bargain stores. Ikea tea lights work too.

    Bar soap works well too.

Thanks! It was a small amount and I will use wax in the future.

I got a 1 lb block of paraffin canning wax, that will last me a lifetime. Available at your local grocery store.

I use it for Tele neck screws, as well as the solid brass screws that sometimes appear in my furniture builds. Also lubes the soles of my planes.
