I’m considering a getting a Peterson Tuners SS-HD StroboStomp

I’m want something a more accurate than chromatic tuners more for setting up guitar needs. I’ve always heard strobe tuners are the best for setting up guitars. Any thoughts on the Peterson’s?

I've had a Peterson Strobe tuner for about 6 or 7 years now and have never had a problem with it. It's not a pedal. I find it to be more accurate than the tuners on my guitar. By that I mean that I'll be flat, and then I'll turn my tuner by the smallest increment my little fingers can muster, and it'll then be slightly sharp. Getting the little dial (digital dial) to stop spinning is pretty difficult. So I'd say that makes it pretty good.

I have two. Love them. They are certainly more than good enough for a home setup. I suspect there is nothing better for a pro setup but those guys will weigh in.

Yep, same. I have one and i'm very pleased with it, i use it for guitar setup aswell as day to day guitar tuning. More accurate than my previous Boss TU-3. Also energy friendly, it's not eating batteries. For bass it's less convincing, sometimes the Peterson gets confused when you feed it low frequencies.

I bought this for the large display and small footprint.

It has a strobe setting and I love it.

The strobe type is faster and easier to be precise for me.

I have a Petersen clip tuner. Best clip tuner I have ever had. Rarely exhibits confusion and seems to be as accurate as Petersen claims it to be.

I believe there are 2 camps in the "What's the best, most accurate tuner" category.

Peterson and Sonic Research

I don't have either, but I see the Sonic Research tuner on the boards of many famous Studio players. I've also seen demos where the Sonic Research is faster at tuning in strobe mode than the Peterson strobe tuners.

Pic your poison, but if I was choosing id go with the Sonic Research because its $10 cheaper and factory direct :)

I use a polytune 2 as I prefer to have the excuse that my poor playing is due to my cheapo tuner :)

I have two Peterson tuner pedals and I also use the app for iPod/iPad/iPhone for my acoustics.

I've been using them since 2004 or thereabouts.

They work for me.

I can’t see using anything else. I have an original (retired) and a Stomp Classic on my pedal board. I know, expensive but definitely worth it for me

Funny...

I remember tuning to my A harmonica.

The whole band of 2 guitars and bass.

We sometimes tuned to a 440 tuning fork, or a pitch-pipe.

Obviously, we weren't really in tune with ourselves, or each other.

I play solo now, so all I have to be is in tune with myself.

I use the built in tuner on my guitar, and fine tune it by ear.

It works quite well.

(Oh, I do have a 40 year old Korg pocket tuner for my other guitars.)

imo.

I got a Sonic Research for Christmas. It is indeed fast and accurate. SR claims accuracy of .02 cents, while Peterson claims .1 cents. Both of those are close enough for jazz. I have only used the Peterson phone tuner and didn't care much for it, I even bought a cable to plug my guitar into my iPhone, bypassing the microphone. SR claims that even though their display is LED, it is a true strobe. Peterson LCD's, I'm not so sure. My favorite phone based tuner is Helix. Instead of analyzing the pitch, it displays the wave folded into itself. It is also very accurate. This is a whistle, most of the notes make flower like patterns. It rotates left for flat and right for sharp.

The original rotating disc strobe tuners were funky but very accurate. I have one of the Strob-o-flips which emulates the moving disc, it is accurate and stays on my workbech.

For general tuning in the music room I have a couple of Korgs that are perfectly accurate and a lot easier to use (actually you can see one in the picture, I use it for general tuning in the shop too).

I have a Peterson Stroboclip which is noticeably more accurate than the D'Addario micro I was using before, and it has a couple "sweetened" tunings that work well--for me the "acoustic" setting is great because I tend to use heavier strings with a wound G. It makes a difference when playing chord melody type stuff all over the fretboard

I have the StroboStomp and I love it.

Plug in directly and turn all the knobs on the guitar up all the way.

I had a peterson when I was playing acoustic a lot. Loved the sweetened tuning for that. Honestly can’t remember why I sold it, but that’s the story with most of the stuff I’ve ever had. 🫤

I’ve been using Sonic Research tuners for many years, and I love them!

The Sonic Research has an LED circle on it that spins when the string is out of tune. If I’m using a Fender guitar, the direction I have to turn my tuner is the exact same as the direction the circle spins on the tuner. It makes it really easy to use.
