BMC Team Elite TEO1- 8K but I got it for half that and swore I would never buy another bike. But some how I've managed to still pick up a few new guitars since and am now looking at a Tele style San Graal guitar which I've fallin for, so out go a couple of real nice instruments to make way for this, and it's going to be hard to do since I have some real nice Teles and others.

Money isn't worth anything if you don't spend it. Hobbies feed the soul and you can't put a price on that.

    True dat.

And just think if we didn't spend our extra cash on guitars and guitar gear, we'd spend it elsewhere. Drugs, alcohol, prostitutes, porn, McDonalds, N..a..z..i memorabilia, super hero movies, Jon Bon Jovi records...all that bad stuff would be getting our money. Thank God for guitars.

Yeah, you could certainly do worse.

When my mom and Dad were first married my mom was a little put off by how much sports my Dad watched. My dad simply said "It's better than spending all of my time in a bar, or chasing women." My mom saw his point.

I give myself a reasonable monthly allowance. If I eat leftovers for lunch and don't go to Starbucks in the afternoon, I bank about a hundred bucks a month without really trying. If I save up for a year, I can make a pretty exciting annual gear purchase. Some years I have bought tools instead...

Last year I bought an acoustic-electric nylon string and an amp for it; this year, maybe a bass and bass amp.

My wife doesn't understand why I need more guitars than fingers, but I don't get any flak about it at home because I save up for stuff first.

At what point are you going to return it to the person you are renting it from?

I would like to see the cashier's face as you return yesterday's lunch

One of my co-wOrkers is a real gun nut, that's all he ever talks about. No telling how much he spends on them or how or how many he has. Yet he criticizes another co-worker for dumping money into his truck trying to reach 1000hp. Que?
I had to remind him of his gun obsession and my guitar obsession. Duh
We all have our little eccentricities. Just a matter of making sure other responsibilities are taken care of first.

I have some guns. Some that I inherited, others that I bought for specific purposes. I'm not really a gun guy though. Guns are tools to me, like saws or wrenches. I like them but I'm not into them.

I do have family members who are gun nuts, though. They spend way more on guns than I ever will on guitars. You know the answer when they say "You can only play one guitar at a time." lol

I think I've told this story hee
here before but it's applicable to this thread.
A while back i was really into buying amps and joked to a friend that I must belong to the amp-of-the-month club.
His wife said something about that being ridiculous because, how many can i play at one time anyway?
My reply, "Well actually all of them. How many pairs of your shoes can you wear at one time?"
    She doesn't much like me.

    well ..

we have a saying here which translates best to " don't look into someone else pockets ", and i think it's a good rule to live by, that said ya know we are all different, passion for something usually translates to expenses in that field and it doesn't matter if it's guitars, cars, watches, whatever...

the desire to get the "holy grail" of things is present more or less in everyone of us, so what I think is a waste of money on an item could be seen in the opposite way by someone who has a different hobby/passion.

crunching it ... do you need a 2000 $ guitar to play ? ... i think not, will you play better, (altough i would say "easier" just related to the performance and build )with that instrument ? maybe ... maybe not.

we can go forever with this ...

do you need a 2000 dollar watch to tell the time ?
do you need a 20 k motorcycle to go from point a to point b ?

left aside the build quality and materials & labor for the item itself there's little "reason" if you buy things with the goal to DO something.

We all like different stuff, some friends asked me how much i spent on my gear, and telling well that guitar was X money, some said "wow .. that's a steep price .. I've seen guitars for 150 euro's that are the exactly same " (we all know that it's not like this however) i usually reply with .. tell me .. " how much did you spend on your TV set ? " ( or something similar ).

Put that in perspective, i like to look at gear sites and sometimes dream about having this or that, I'm not rich.. so i can't afford most of it, IE there's a thread about a John Mayer Martin for 10 K, even if i was able to afford it i don't know if i would pull the trigger on something like that. (i'm not talking about the quality and woods and value ) because to me that's bonkers .. but that's me.

I try to just Ignore and avoid entering in conversations about spending money for our own hobbies/passions/needs, everyone is right in his mind, and it's really hard to convince "the others" that they're wrong .. we all are in someones mind.

"M'kay" and changing the subject can save a lot of hot air.

One man's guitar is another man's Harley. To each his own.

All I know is once I stopped buying houses for women who ended up disliking me anyway I had far more money left over to buy guitars and amps. :D

If it wasn't for tdp, I would've never realized that I need more than one guitar.

She knows it makes me happy for short dough. She sees the hobbies of my contemporaries. She hears the friction with their wives. And she knows "that look" when a new piece of gear grabs me. I once struggled over buying a guitar from a local luthier. When I finally called him to purchase it, he said "Your wife told me to save it for you before you left last week". I wouldn't trade her for a blackguard tele. Maybe for two....

This is all beyond me. These days I debate with myself for a week before deciding if a new set of strings is worth the cost.

If I had a nickel for every time I was told I spend too much on guitars, I’d have enough money to buy more guitars.

I find that girlfriends/spouses are great at putting my my guitar purchases in perspective.

Like spending 6k on a set of four chairs to go with that 5k dining table that was simply a must buy :D

Honerable mentions are given to art purchaces and shoes.
