HUGE Ubu fan here.
I always thought they were listening to a lot of The Cars when they wrote Down By the River II for their 1995 release Ray Gun Suitcase.

Allen Ravenstine was one of the few people not using his synths like electric organs at the time .
I saw them live and he Allen Ravenstine was using EML synths and he was killing it, doing Louis and Bebe Barron forbidden planet level sound design work!
